Savage 99 First Rifle?

Just saw one in Cabelas in Saskatoon for just over $1400 + tax. A Mossberg 464 right near to it for $399 + tax. You can buy a real nice pre-64 94 for not too much money. (I'll leave out the figure to avoid three pages of debate on how much is too much....:)
 
Here are the stock sets I spoke of at the beginning of this thread.

This first set came with my rifle when I first bought it. They were refinished recently and have a beautiful two dollar coin pressed into the stock. How amazing.







The second set was a stock that was given to me by another CGN member years ago (IceDog). Since he was kind enough to offer this to me back then I will return the favour. Its a nice looking stock for the most part but does have some discolouration on the comb.

I bought one of the new productions a couple of months ago.

Not being a collector I just don't see the value in a beat up Pre-64 for big money.

Have a new production 1895 and 1892 as well. Nice rifles IMO.
 
I had a 99F when i was younger , chambered in .300 Savage. It had a beautiful stock on it. Dark, ###y, swirrly walnut with that elegant schnabel forend. THat gun was a shooter, would put 5 150grain Sierra's into a 3 inch group at 200yds. Love the way it handled and pointed. Took 3 deer with it and then in a fit of diminished mental capacity, I sold it to a friend who promptly lopped 2 inches off the butstock for his ugly wife so she c ould shoot it. Needless to say, he is no longer a friend of mine.
 
Mine's a 1966 99DL (gold trigger, case hardened lever, machine turned bolt, aluminum spool round counter) in .308 topped with a Weaver K4 scope. It is my absolute favourite rifle. The thing is so light, points so nicely... Not to mention it is a lefty's DREAM (lever, tang safety). I took my first deer with it 2 years ago, I hope I never sell it.
