I have a 24" barrelled .250-3000 that is a great shooter and has taken several deer .Bubba sawed the butt stock and put a shotgun pad on it!As well it has been drilled and tapped for a scope.I want to replace the stock with an aftermarket one of the correct length.Is this reversable or do I own a "grey rat"? Can scope holes be welded and cleaned up to be invisable? On the plus side along with the gun I got a NIB marked FEB/1951 Savage factory replacement butt stock with knurled steel butt plate wrapped in wax paper Never been on a gun.Not sure if I should keep it or let it go to a collector? [Chicopee Falls marked box] serial #525590.......when was it made and what model variation?............Thanx Harold

You have a 1949 Model EG. Drilled and tapped you have a nice hunting rifle, but nothing that would command a collector's price. That being said the way the savage parts are selling in the US I would think that you would almost get as much for that butt stock and box from a US collector (easy to ship to the US also) as you would for the rifle here in Canada. So if you are looking at the best bang for your buck I would sell them separately, it won't add value to a rifle that has been drilled and tapped, but if you sold it separately the uncut butt stock is worth way more than the one with the butt pad.

What should I ask for the NIB stock? The rifle is not for sale but I didn't want to put the new stock on it all things considered.Where can I get a aftermarket stock to replace BUBBA'S handiwork?Thanx for your help...Harold
 
In "Rifle/Handloader" magazine an artical on Sav99 reffered to 99's that had minimal collectors value due to BUBBA + friends and other permenantly altered specimans.Aftermarket tapping /drilled sling swivels etc..........The "Grey Rat" is a nickname for the silver worn reciever area from being well worn /carried[a serviceable hunting piece]nothing more nothing less............still short circuits deer just fine .Mine will only stabilize 87gr {Speer is the shortest and HOT CORE] deer bullet.And the 100gr Dominion RN that you can't get.The 1-14 "doesn't like 100gr SP's worth a darn......................Harold *Aslo have a 700Classic in 250-3000 til death do us part

Barseness (Muledeer), ya, I remember that article. Pretty much stole everything he wrote in that article from us guys in the Savage forum yet you never seen him even make a post in there. Seems odd not to post yet he knows so much about the 99's huh? That article pizzed me right off.

Harold, that term "grey rat" was coined by a buddies dad before he died and it stuck. It was originally invented as a term for grey Winchesters cause his dad collected those and Jed collected Savages. It more or less stuck and is a common phrase by Savage collectors.
 
Interesting history on that.He wouldn't be the first author to plagerize some elses stuff..............I'd like a 99 in 38.55 and or 30-30 someday..Harold
 
I have the 30-30 covered, but still trying to get a 38-55! The only caliber that I am missing out of the 15 that they were produced in. I keep hoping that someone that has one will offer it up, but I'm still waiting!

Bogo, not really plagerise, more like a collection of all the Savage collectors knowledge and information and made into an article. Well, 5 or 6 collectors anyways, some of those guys on there have over 100 99's in their collection and don't even know what models they have. More money than brains.

In all fairness, how does anybody know exactly what models they have, seems most consider the identifications based on THE Sav 99 book written by one man, who's to say he's write?

Not to stir #### MDog but we've had this discussion before, there are certain 1899's out there (I have one) that although is clearly stamped by Sav
"Model 1899" there are some collectors such as yourself that choose to ignore that & call it a model "99" simply because the serial supposedly dates it outside the "Model 1899" range according to the writings of a single author of one book.

Seems to me if Savage clearly identifies a model by the stamping it puts on a gun how can you disregard their own designation :confused:

I have one the same, in a nice little case with a 410 barrel :D

There never seemed to be any hard and fast rule with anything that they did, lots of over lap and a number of transition years. That's what makes it so much more fun to collect savages than winchesters for me! :dancingbanana: There were just so many options that one could get back then from the factory. Just imagine any company doing that now! They would loose their shirt, we wouldn't want to pay extra and they wouldn't be able to mass produce them!

Alway interesting or confusing, one or the other!

Poor old Art died last year from cancer eh Senior. Wonder whatever happened to that N.I.B. EG he got?

Had a few conversations with him, he will truly be missed! One of the few guys on the retard site I cared for (including you, of course :p)

I'd like to buy that one back myself, but then what the hell do you do with something like that??? Leave it in a safe for no-one to see :rolleyes: At least in the states you could put it on display!

Ya, it was a smart idea getting rid of it. Having a N.I.B. EG in Canada is like having a stolen Ferrari. Fun to look at but you can't show it off.

I look at my guns as a retirement savings plan instead of the government screwing me over.:)
 
No, that gun wouldn't have went to him, he doesn't chase ambulances, I'll give him that. Most likely went to a few of the big collectors that used to go to the Vegas gun shows with him.
