Hi Gunnutz. You are the best in this stuff. And I will really appreciate your help.
I got Savage 99, serial #160441, 1914. It's in 303 Sav. Wood is in a rough condition. Stock was broken 50 years ago and "repaired" with some kind of epoxy and tape.
Looking for advice how to restore rifle's value or just repair it.

Thanks in advance.

Need help to add pics

Who knows why I am not allowed to attach file?
Is there easy way to insert pics for computer alliterated guy?

Restore it!!!

A Savage 99 in this condition is a candidate for restoration. I have seen stocks for 99s on E-bay, you would have to check that the stock will fit your rifle model.

If it is like the Boyds set I put on my 99F then there is still some work to do. The chevrons at the cheeks were not cut out and the stock wood was proud of the receiver all the way around. FWIW Western Gun Parts in Edmonton sells used and new Savage stocks. Actually their available stock of parts was pretty amazing last time I asked and its in Canada. Just Google it.

If you want it to have any collector value an original butt stock is required.
Ebay, CGN etc. are the places to look. If it is a gun without much finish remaining it isn't worth the expense, standard 99's don't command a real high price. If the gun has a lot of blue remaining, check out gunshows, sometimes you can find a 99 that is pretty much beat with good wood on it.

Savage 99

Thank you guys!
Yes, Western gun parts has repro stock for 149.95. At Boyds it is 64.95, finished, strait stock.
I still want you to see it, so I'll try through fotobacket. When I removed tape stock just fall into pieces. And it looks like buttstock was shorten to remove crescent. No bluing left on this rifle.

I have never seen a stock too badly damaged or even broken that it could not be restored to service, and looking very very nice, by my friend and fellow CGN member. Sounds like the best option would be a repair of existing stock? Pictures would be nice.

Sorry! I couldn't attach pics here. Fr-ng photobacket ask for URL, I have to call provider and so on. Registration on Firing line took me 2 min.
