savage 99 in 308 winchester

Interested in a good accurate load for the Savage 99 in 308 with a 180grainer round nose bullet.

not a barn burner just a good safe accurate dependable load for this rifle

any help would be appreciated
 
What powders do you have on hand?

With 748 you get thrown charges that are plus or minus a tenth. 43 to 44 gr work well in mine.

RELOADER 15 is one of my favourites for 308 szed cases. Again, 43 to 44 gr works well.
 
using round nose bullets negates the natural advantages of the 308 unless you're intrested in a 200 yard maximum affair -the WHOLE point of the 308 exercise is to use pointy bullets for better penetration, and better velocity retention

180grain round nose are clsoe range bush type hunting Savage99 used as dogging gun open sights usually shot quick thick shots

Do pointy bullets penetrate better?
 
I think you'll find that round nose bullets penetrate just as well as spitzers. I think you will further find, should you care to actually measure bullet drop between the two types of bullets (assuming similar velocities of course), that at practical hunting distances, you will discover only a small advantage to the pointed bullets. For the op it is not a question of need but wants to use round nose bullets.Nothing wrong with that. In thick stuff under 200 yards difference in trajectory is negligible. + or - a couple of inches when fired off hand at a close target means nothing. A round nose probably hits harder due to larger surface area hitting target. It is a personal choice and in my opinion a good one. I would try IMR 3031 0r 4895. reloader 15 is also a good choice.

You'll have to back of 2-3grs from MAX with the 99's as extraction can be a problem.But otherwise all I've ever owned shot under MOA with handloads..........Harold
 
If you compare a round nose 150 and a sptizer boat-tail 150 both fired at 2850, when sighted with a 200 yard zero, the difference in drop at 300 is 2". Big deal! I believe a round nose bullet produces a real advantage over a pointy bullet, specifically a larger entry wound which is less likely to close up and tends to dump more blood on the ground.
