I wandered in to my local gunshop lookin for some ammo and found this.
Savage Model 99m Serial 1014930, in .308win, and a tang safety, pretty well new condition. There are letters "SP" in a cirlce on the left side of the receiver and a "Y" just where the barrel meets the receiver. The only finish wear on the whole rifle is on the lever inside from cycling it. (see pic)
Case colouring elswhere is 100% on the exposed part of the lever, no finish wear on the receiver at all, not even on high spots. Wood is new conditon too. I've never seen a 99 this clean.
So, any idea of the model? (letter designation I mean) the year of mfg, and also, did they come from the factory with the bolt jeweled like this?

It's a model DL made in 1960, and a nice one to from what I can see.

Most 99 collectors stick to the rifles made before the tang safety but one with condition will turn some heads.

What did you steal it for?

Oh ya, the bolt was factory damascened and the sling studs look like they've been changed cause it used to come with Savage #7 sling swivels, not Uncle Mikes studs.

Nice find. I'm sure the rust on the inside of the lever will clean up nicely. Just add a Leupold 2-7 compact & you'll be all set... ;)

Thanks for the info.
That ain't rust on the inside of the lever, it's the case colouring. The white on the back edge in the pic is where it's worn off from leverin'. Prettiest damn thing I ever saw... if somebody said Savage was making these again and this was a brand new one, I'd believe it, the conditon is that exceptional. I doubt it's ever been fired- yet.
I do kinda wish it wasn't the tang safety, I love the Marbles tang sight on my Rossi, but in this condition, I wasn't about to pick and chose. I couldn't get it outta the store fast enough. So, what do you guys figger is a fair price for it? Not selling, just want to see...

Nope, that was what was kicking around in the trunk at the time and worked well enough to get it home. There's a lesson to be learned here kids, always have a spare gun case in you trunk. You never know when you might need it.

Easy now, don't go gettin to carried away.

It's been fired plenty, either that or someone has been pushing and pulling that safety back and forth for a hobby, also the checkering on the front of that forearm looks well worn but could be the pic I guess. It's a post-mil rifle, not a pre-mil so it's mainly a shooter. It does have some nice condition though, $600 tops.

I picked up a 99c 308 up in Kamloops at the April gun show. Paid $375 and the blueing is 100%. The wood is scratched up and has been carried but the clip in it shows no wear at all-blueing on the floor plate is as new. Mech tight too and it shoots nice. Very nice handling rifle. Gonna see a Nikon Buckmaster soon and get some range time. Saw lots at the show-all beaters and much used for much more money. When luck smiles..... One of the fellows on this site dated it around 1960. Western Gun Parts has lots of parts for these and a selection of wood too-used, or aftermarket and some new. Happy shooting.

MadDog may want to correct me on this but I don't believe that Savage starting making the detachable mag model C until 1965.
I have two of these rifle (not including one rotary mag model) and they have now worked their way into the rifle of choice when i grab one to go hunting.

Yeah, think it was Maddog that provided the info on another forum.Been lots of them lately for the 99. Glad I got one. Not lettin this one go.

Sorry Savagefan, I'm still pumped about it, it might take a while for that to wear off.
One last question, is there any way to mount tang style sight on this without drilling and tapping? Are there any other sight options?

I have a 99c in the same condition as your 99m. Mine doesn't have the machine turned action, mine has a flip down sight, mine doesn't have the gold trigger, and mine has different checkering on the stock, and I don't have a cheek rest stock.

I also re finished my stock, because the old clear coat had worn in places.

Great rifle, mines also a .308

Joe, quit driving up the prices :) $600 is a little steep for a post mil. in .308 The clip loaders are getting up there though because of the hunter demand.

Ya I know, I was kinda hesitant on that but I did say tops!

It's cause I see the C's on this site TRYING to be sold for over $500, if those guys are getting over 5 bills for a C then a DL should go just a touch higher and this one is in better condition than 95% of the C's I see on here.

BTW, I might have a 308 99C for sale soon.;):D

Forgot to answer Oddbawls question. Yes there is a way of mounting a peep sight to the DL, you'll have to get a Williams FP99 or an old Lyman 57SB, they are peep sights that mount to the factory rear scope holes and are basically the same as a tang sight only they'd be better because they are windage adjustable unlike the old tangs.
