Gentlemen, I have just purchased a Savage model 99C in .308, and I love it. My only issue is the fact that when the rifle is fully in battery and locked (safety off), the lever will wobble up and down over 1/4 inch. When the safety is on, of course, the lever won't move, but with the safety off, the lever moves around and makes a lot of noise. I intend to use the rifle to hunt with, and the noise made by the rattling of the lever could be a problem. Is this condition normal, or is it something that I should just get used to? I have never owned a 99 before, and I have no experience with them apart from wanting one since I was six years old. Thanks. Erik.

Erik, what you've got is a loose lever bit, some say bite. It can be fixed by either a gunsmith if you don't feel confident to do it yourself or p.m. me and I'll show you a thread on the step by step way of doing it. The lever has to come out of the gun (not an easy task) and then you gotta give it a rap with a rubber mallet on a certain angle. I know a gunsmith on this site that might do it for you sa well if you ask him nice enough. He did a loose lever bit on one of mine once and it was an excellent job.

When the safety is in the "on" position, the lever is locked in place. There is a little raised piece of metal on the lever that is engaged by the safety bar.
