My savage 99 in 303 savage sometimes jams as the cartridge coming out of the magazine hangs up on the protruding firing pin. I took the firing pin out and cleaned all the old crap off it and out of the bolt what I could get anyway, maybe it will be good now but I don’t see any mechanism to retract the firing pin when opening the bolt. Does it just freewheel in there after firing?

There should be a little firing pin retracting spring.
When the bolt is closing, and the cartridge is being fed out of the magazine, the firing pin should be held back by the sear and won't be projecting. If it is, you might have a broken firing pin.

There’s no spring and I don’t see a place for one. I see that I can”double clutch” it with the lever when opening just hitch it closed a bit before the cartridge comes out to pull the pin back with the sear. Not an ideal solution.

The spring goes on the underside of the firing pin and bears against the forward surface of the part caught by the sear.
