Just bought a Savage Model 99C. It's pretty filthy inside and gummed up with old grease and such. I want to take out the bolt (no further) so I can get at the works with a cleanser, but am having trouble actually removing the bolt.

I've removed the breech bolt stop, allowing the breech bolt to move further to the rear. It will not quite come out to the left however.

Is there a trick to this? Advice would be appreciated.

I think there's a how- to on youtube-gunsmithing:savage 99- if you can git past him calling it a raffle

If it's the same guy, I like his mustache... It looks however like he took out a screw that mine doesn't have and the breech bolt just fell out which mine is certainly not inclined to do.

I've got a 99c clip loader and you MAY have to encourage it with a soft mallet from the right side- personally, i'd just stay where you're at and use a spray degreaser, then use one of those straw sprayers and go down the firing pin hole- maybe you can't see the screw b/c the shadow of the bolt or the bolt covering it is in the way- it's got to be there
