I have a question for Savage 99 owners about the force required to work the action.
I was holding one a few days ago and when I tried to work the lever I nearly had to stand on my head to open it.
Are they that hard to ####?
The gun looks great but they can't be that hard to operate, this took too much force to work the action.
Should it be taken to a smith?

wtf happened to my post- all that's wrong is one of the screws is too tight- first place i'd go woud be the sear screw- that's the big one at the back in the receiver, then if it doesn't loosen up, pull the buttstock and loosen each one a notch or two until the lever moves easily- i had this happen years ago, and i can't remember which one it was- where it should really lock up is on the upstroke in the last inch , b/c you're forcing the bolt into it's mortise in the frame- that's how the 99 locks up- an oversized bolt into a undersized mortise in the frame
while you're in there with the buttstock off, use the opportunity to lube the action as well

Is the action hard to open or is it it hard to cycle? Actually the mechanism that locks the bolt is the lever and not the bolt. Common problem with loose lockup / levers when closed is the the curve on the lever. It acually lands on a pad on the front inside of the action. If someone has tried to adjust this and went too far it will bind on the pad. Another issue could just be old/wrong grease and it just need a real good cleaning. They are the simplest rifle to take apart and do a thorough cleaning on.
