Savage 99 safety

Picked up a savage 99f in 308, and really like it. But it kicks the safety on every time its shot. I pulled the butt off and it looks like a small u shaped spring for the safety. Can I just pull out this spring and tweek it a bit, or am I missing something.

Is it a tang safety or a lever safety?

Its a tang safety. Im thinking the end of the spring might be broken but I havent pulled it out.
