So I got a savage 99 in .308 win. What is the twist rate of the barrel and what bullet weights are others having luck with? Also how does it handle a hot hand load?

Already did the search function thanks :)

Usual twist rate for .308 Win is 1/12 or 1/10. You can measure your barrel with a tight patch and a marked cleaning rod to determine exactly what yours is. The M99 Savage is a rear locking action,so best to avoid max loads. Max loads are better handled in a front locking bolt gun like the M700 Rem or M70 Win.Generally excellent accuracy can be found at less than max velocity. The .308 Win handles standard hunting bullets of 150,165,and 180 gr. Best to shoot yours to determine what works best in it. The performance baseline powder for .308 Win handloads is IMR 4895. Others that work well incl IMR 3031, IMR 4064, IMR 4320, W748, H4895, Varget, and BLC2.

Forget hot loads in a lever action even a Savage.Win 760 is great in a .308 with mag primers..............never seen a 99 that wouldn't shoot MOA with loads it likes..........Harold......any of the above mentioned powders work as the .308 is not generally fussy

Thanks guys, I am going to try some factory 150's and 180's of a few different manufacturers this weekend. I would love to get MOA with a factory cartridge.

Purple thanks for all the powder info, I will have to try some of those out.

.308 Ammo

If you are going to stick to factory, try some Federal bluebox in 150. I am surprised how well that stuff shoots in both a .308 and a .30-06 I have. It also performs very well on game for a SP slug. The .308 I have is also a 99.
