Hey there I found a Savage 99B Takedown for sale in 250-3000, the gun looks like it is in very good shape and it's priced reasonably (IMHO) $550. However I am not up on 99's so was hoping to hear from some of you 99 nutZ. The recoil pad doesn't look original from the pics I've seen but the rest seems original. I will try and put some pics here but am not very computer handy.

The butt pad is not original, it has been drilled and tapped which is not original. Stock has been refinish you can see too much metal on the lower tang. It is not a 99B. Not having the serial number it is either an 1899 250-3000 or a 99G. 99B wouldn't have come with checkering or a pistol grip. For a collector it is not worth it. That being said if it is a caliber that you like / want. You won't find a classier lever action in this caliber. If you are looking for a shooter with a scope and it tickles your fancy go for it! You are the only one that knows if it is worth it to you. If there are no cracks in the wood behind the tang (common with older 99's), it has a good bore and the barrel is tight and indexes up properly you should be good to go!

Thanx for the sage advice 99trix, very helpful. you sure know your savages. can you recommend a book on the 99's and their variations so a person has something to go on. I am not a collector as such but would like to begin adding some original older firearms to my collection, and as of now only hav a couple post WWI/ PreWWII winnie '94's. Thank you again.

I'm not totally convinced the stocks been redone. The tang isn't that proud and the forearm still sits flush. The checkering is still sharp unlike a refinished stock unless someone has had it recut but seems like a whole lotta trouble to go through for an extra $100.
