Anyone shoot one of these? They're an awfully sweet rifle. The last time I picked one up was in a basement gunshop. It was a .250 and I had just gotten my PAL. All I can remember about the gun was how naturally it balanced. Wish I had picked 'er up. Anyone still use one for deer?

Cheers,

Stef

I have a 99c 308 that I picked up at the Kamloops gun show a few years back. I am left handed and it is a leftie friendly rifle being a tang safety. Also has a DM so it makes a good truck gun too. I have a few Winchester levers and it is as comfy to carry as any of them but takes a bigger pill and is quite accurate. They have a following for sure. Well made and solid. Plus available in cals the Winnies are not. Real nice lines. Whats not to like? Keeping mine and wish I could afford to collect. Also looking for a late model 250.

A 99 is a classic. There is enough of them out there to keep a guy good and dizzy, as well as flat-broke. I now use my 358 without a scope. The unit now "flows like water", as, I guess, many 99'rs will agree. West coast black tail gun par-stupid-good.

I take a 1950 99 EG in 300 Savage to camp every year and take it out if its not raining (its in good shape). Only missed one deer with it, but I dont want to talk about that. Points quickly, carries good, very nice rifle.

I have one or two in the safe ;) Wonderful rifles. My go to is a post mil 99C in 284, but I also hunt a 99F in 243 and 99R in 250-3000. Most of the rest are safe queens. 15 different calibers to choose from, many different configurations. But they are like potato chips, you can't stop at one :D

I let my minty Model 250-3000 go to my brother, but I gave a nice 1899 Short Rifle to my daughter to use deer hunting. She shot a nice doe with it two yrs ago :)

have 1 in 303 savage trying to find ammo is tough to find you have to find old cil-dominion stuff not use alot anymore down to 10 shells got to find more ammo!!!

i know it sounds like blasphamy, but can the 300 savage 99s be rechambered to take 308 win?- i've had my eye on a td for quite some time , but it's typically in 300 sav- my saddle gun is a 308 savage 99cd- circa 1970 - i'd like to get a proper td, where the barrel comes off, and not the stock

I have 99s in .30-30, .250, and .308. My wife liked the .308 so much it is now "hers." They are without a doubt my favourite lever rifle, and I can even load pointy bullets in the .30-30. I'm currently rebuilding my .250; the barrel was NEVER cleaned before I bought it (zero rifling left), and the stock was gone (replaced by a pathetic attempt at woodworking). They are the best out there, and I wish they still made them.

Erik.

my 250-3000 takes deer every year

then spends the winter bragging to the 22HP,300,308,32-40....

still lookin for the right 1899 in 303Sav tho...

the pre mil actions are the best lever design ever imo...

I know that a take down cannot be rechambered to 308. Savage made changes to the receivers in the mid 50's to accept the 308 cartridge family. All of the take downs were built before WWII so they cannot be adapted.

Not a big fan of 99's but I've got a TD in 250.
Shoots ~ 1.25" with 85 grain B-Tips.
Might try to shoot a coyote with it.

Pretty much anything below the 900,000 serial number can't be rechambered to 308, thats when they opened up the chambers to allow them to accept the cartridge.

Plus, you'll have to find a 308 rotor if you did try it, by then you might as well of just bought one.

I use my 99's for deer, usually my 99-375 and a 99R in 358 come with me but next year I'm taking a 99C in 284 and a Savage 110 in 7mm-08.

My first new to me rifle was a mod 99 F in 300 savage. I shot my first deer with it and later traded for something bigger and better. After many rifles in many different actions and calibers, I bought another 99F in 300 this year on the EE. It is a joy to carry and shoots a consistant 1 1 /2" groups all day long. My present relaods are giving me approx 2500 fps with 165 gr Hornadys. More than enough for anyting I hunt out to 200 yards and more. If you can find one you like buy it.

I have a savage mod 99-F in 308 win,and a mod 24 410/22lrf,and a win mod
1890 made in 1901 with a 1917 savage cut down to 20 inch octugon barrell, made by a good gunsmith !

I like savage ,but don't own a new one! Hell I don't like any new guns made!
