Savage 99

I have one or two in the safe ;) Wonderful rifles. My go to is a post mil 99C in 284, but I also hunt a 99F in 243 and 99R in 250-3000. Most of the rest are safe queens. 15 different calibers to choose from, many different configurations. But they are like potato chips, you can't stop at one :D

I have forced myself to stop at one! It's also in 284. MOA with 150 grain Partitions. Slick rotary magazine. Carming and useful gear.

Picked one up with a broken and dried out stock for $50.00. It's an A model I think made in the 1920's chambered for .303 Savage and have found 3 boxes of Winchester 190 gr Silvertips at $60 a box. Going to use it for deer this year. Will be looking for a 99 Hi-Power now.

my father and grand father have on each, which they bought new in ?? they will know the exact date though. They still use them each year though for hunting. My grandfather is 88 years old and still got his deer this year with it. Grandpas is a 99F and dads is a 99C both are in .308.

PICKED UP A 99R FROM 1950-51 IN 300 SAVAGE IN PRISTEAN CONDITION AS I STARTED TO LEARN TO SHOOT WITH MY UNCLES 300 SAV. TAKEDOWN BACK IN THE MID 80'S. I SAW THE FARTHEST CONFIRMED SHOT WITH MY UNCLES 300 SAV. IT WAS JUST UNDER 500 YARDS IT WAS INCREDIBLE LUCK AS HE RAISED THE SCOPE ABOUT 3 FEET OVER THE BACK OF THE BIG COW MOOSE. MY JOB WAS TO WATCH THREW THE BINOCULARS AND LISTEN IF I HEARD THE BULLET HIT. IT HIT ALRIGHT AND THE MOOSE RAN DOWN INTO A BOG WERE WE FINISHED IT OFF:kickInTheNuts: I WAS PRETTY YOUNG WHEN THIS HAPPENED AND I WONT TAKE A SHOT OVER 250 YARDS WITH A MAGNUM, JUST MY RULE AFTER THIS EPISODE!!! GREAT TO HERE ALL THE DIFFERRENT STORIES WITH YOUR 99'S:D JUST GOES TO SHOW MAYBE SAVAGE SHOULD MAKE A SPECIAL RUN OF TAKEDOWNS SOLD WITH 2 DIFFERENT CALIBRES:nest: IF ANYONE HAS A 410 GAUGE BARRELL THERE WILLING TO SELL ,PLEASE PM ME, REGARDS DALE IN T-BAY

My dad has two in .308. One with a magazine and one with a rotary magazine. They are light and semi-compact and are excellent brush guns.

Picked up a 250-3000 in kinda rough shape 2 years ago. Had a plug of mud in the bore about 3 inches from the muzzle .Reciever was a little rusty and the wood was scratched though fairly solid with lots of dings. I cleaned it all up installed a vintage lyman and now can't believe how it shoots.

have 1 in 303 savage trying to find ammo is tough to find you have to find old cil-dominion stuff not use alot anymore down to 10 shells got to find more ammo!!!
Winchester did a run of 303 Sav. about 15 or 20 years ago. I got a couple boxes at the Powder Keg in Kamloops in about '96. white box with red and orange lines and a horse on the end of the lines.

303Savage is pretty much a reloaders calibre now. I have avoided buying one (so cheap though) just cause of that. I do reload so not a problem but even if you find some ammo it is likely to cost what you could buy a press and a decent set of dies for. Almost same for the 250-3000. I have found a local supplier that has the 303 Savage brass. I shoot a 38-55 and a box of ammo is over $60. Got brass and a bunch of cast boolits so likely costs me $10 for a box of better ammo. I like those numbers. Dont take long to pay off reloading stuff at that rate.

For over thirty years I hunted deer, elk and moose with a .308 Savage 99C that I bought new. It was a deadly accurate rifle that shot 1/2 inch or better and it was the only hi-power I had. I loved it and when it finally "went south" for no good reason that I can figure, I let a supposedly competent gunsmith replace the old barrel with a new one. Don't do that!! It shot just as bad.

Another gunsmith, and one I have every reason to trust, told me they could never be fixed and that he would never attempt to replace a barrel on one. It cost me 100's of bucks to no avail.

If I could find a known good one and I happened to have the cash I would likely buy it. They are/were a great rifle but I am also told the barrels are easy to burn. (Beware of hot reloads from nincompoop friends!}

Meanwhile, I have "remarried" into the bolt action family but I "look back" a lot.

Fortunately the barrel of my 99c is mint. Seems it was one of those "carried lots fired little" as there was no bluing at all missing on the follower plate of the DM. All the metal was as new but the stocks were a little dinged. No proble for me especially since I got it for less than $400. Mine now. Have a spare mag (Western Gun Parts)and cant tell the new one from the old one.

fills the freezer every year mod 99 250 my 11 year old now claims as his. he shot 3 bucks with it. His great,great granfather bought it new. so now use 300 sav or 308 in a 99.

I have a 99F in .308, a 99F in .300, an EG in .300, an 1899 TD in 250/3000, and a 99C that was rebored from .308 to .358. They see limited use on dry weather days. I stupidly refused to go the extra $25 ( from my offer of $325 to the owners asking of $350) for a .243 about 5 years ago. If I find another at a reasonable price, I'll snap it up, and unless it's a verified "collector", it may get redone as a .260.
