Savage 99C Manf. Date?

Thanks alot MadDog. I'll see if she can shoot. Is there a source for detail stripping? It was pretty dirty and I'd like to clean the inside back of the reciever/parts/bolt.

99's have gotta be the easiest rifle to clean, you don't even have to strip it, just pull the butt stock off it and you can get at pretty much everything right there.

Sorry for the semi hijack, but MadDog when did Savage start using letters after 'model 99'? I was at the range today and a guy was shooting an old beat up 250-3000 stamped just model 99 - (he had no idea how old it was)...

The A series rifles started to be used in 1969.

The serial sytem was used on all the Savage guns put out after 1969 regardless of model. Exception would be the Canadian made rimfires, I don't think they used the A series on them. They still use the A series today, prior to that every model had their own set of serial numbers depending on the model.

I'd have no idea on the gun range guys 250 age unless I had a serial number or a pic.

Interesting, I thought it would have been way before 1969 when the letters started. Looking at the rifle from my limited knoledge on these I'm thinking it was quite old, pre war for sure. It had a very slim schnabel forend, not drilled and tapped. Next time I'll get some numbers:rolleyes:

Here's what you have when you remove the buttstock.

Thanks MadDog, I took it apart once I found a "screwdriver" long enough. Had to get the tire iron outta the truck. lol. Anyways, I must say I grew a new appreciation and respect for the Savage99 after spending time with it. Looks are decieving I guess.

This is the first one I've really handled for any length of time and I was surprised to see a well designed simple lever action. The rifle was very dirty inside, I even took the one magazine apart, it was filthy. The other magazine bottom was "pinned" so I couldn't slide it off. Must be the original magazine. I got it all cleaned and oiled up, even copper cleaned the barrel. She's ready to shoot.

It does have an old bushnell scope on it that may have to be replaced with a new one. If it shoots well I'm going to refinish the stock and re-blue some worn areas. Also may add a recoil pad.

Hey I have pretty much the same gun (308). Bought it off a friend of mine.
I just put 25 rounds through it and sighted in the scope.
I really love it. Always wanted a lever action.
I've been looking for a manual on this rifle but have not been able to find one. Have you had any luck?
Are they hard to take down and fully clean?
