Does anyone know when Savage first offered 308 in the 99F rifle or was it offered in other models first and when i know it came out in 1952 but did they offer it right away in there rifes and what models?

I would say 1957. The 1956 Gun Digest only lists the 250 and the 300 for available calibers. The 1957 issue shows the 243 and 308.

Late '56. If you are wondering when yours was made check out the stamp on the front of the lever boss on the receiver. There you will see an oval stamp with a number and letter. If the letter is an H = 56, I = 57, J = 58 and so on up until 1970. O and Q were not used.

I have one that i think is E and the one in rout a H.You say late 56 where can i find that info?

I'm a BLR guy, ....if I was to purchase a Savage, I'd have to say that combo, 99F in .308, would be #1 on my list. Used to sight in one of my co-workers "F" in .300 many years ago, and loved the rifle,..not so much the caliber.

Roll back the clock 55 years or so, ...and picture a young hunter leaving the local hardware store with a new Savage 99F in the "new" whitetail hammer .308Win, soon to become a standard against which many cartridges are compared.
I'd bet he'd have a grin from ear to ear,...... even after dropping two whole weeks pay for it!:) I see in an old Guns 1956 catalog they listed for $111.85 and the average Canadian weekly wage was $70.67:eek:..
