I bought a used Savage A17 recently and am curious to see if others have had issues with a failure to feed? To be clear the seller did disclose some feeding issues due to magazine not locking in all of the time. FYI the gun came with 4 magazines/clips and its a constant issue with all of them........The seller also was not to enthused about the accuracy but its a semi auto and do not expect out of the box tack driving accuracy with any semi auto in that price range.
I bought one of cabela's 17hmr rimfire scopes, figured it was good enough for the gun. Mounted it, bore sighted the rig and went out for a test fire.......pretty much a gong show. Accuracy horrible, failure to feed huge issue and after 30 rounds the cross hairs in the scope twisted!!!!!! lol had to laugh. I should say I cleaned the gun before I went to the range....but after the scope shifted I thought I must have forgot to tighten scope rings or bases but no they were tight and then I noticed a little movement in the stock and barrelled action, I figured that's not good.......went back home to regroup...
Took scope back to cabelas and upgraded (I think ) to Bushnells 17hmr scope. Took barreled action out of stock cleaned gun, reattached action to stock, tightened everything down put scope on and bore sighted gun. and off to range for second go around.
I fired a series of bullets at 50 yards, some single shots as I had to refeed the barrel but nice group at 50 yards sub moa about 3" high. Brought the cross hairs down to an 1" high at 50 and fired a series of shots again failure to feed constant but nice groups. I then proceeded to 100 yards fired some groups and again pleased with accuracy but failure to feed is a PIA......I then rested the bottom off gun on top of bean bag to have some pressure on clip/magazine and had no failure to feed!!!!!!
Sorry for long story
Question- have other members had any feeding issues with their A17s? If so what have you done to remedy the issue? I went to Savage's website and some have said the ground some material off the magazine/clip and might have to go that route if Savage does nothing to honour my complaint to them.
I'm sure if I duct taped the clip/magazine it would work reliably....!
For the record I only used the CCI ammo recommended by Savage....
Thanks for any advice in advance.....
