Would i be right to think all i need to do is close the bolt and thread the barrel on till it touches the bolt then back off just a c hair and then spin on the barrel nut? Im sure theres a bit more to it then that

No, you'll require a 'GO' headspace guage .... or at the very least a sized case to act a a gauge. (proper headspace gauge preferred in my opinion).

Here's a video :

There seems to be a lot of guys wanting to change out barrels on savage rifles because they seem easy to do with a barrel nut.
Thing is I have seen more barrels improperly installed and even improperly chambered from barrel blanks.
Nobody seems to check the bolt nose clearance only the headspace there is a good reason for both.
Most times just headspacing will work when swapping out factory barrels , there are a lot of barrels out there however that are improperly chambered I seen one that had almost
60 thous on the bolt nose clearance once.
Op if you are dead set on doing it yourself do your homework first .

If i do a 260 in going to use a 243 and if i do a 280 im going to make it out of 270 so i just have to do the barrle and headspacing, im thinking of putting a different barrel on and just sell off the take off
