Savage action

Thanks yodave. There is a store who is selling a nib model11 in 300wsm for $400.00. I asked them the question but their response was that they could not take the barrel off to check.Would you $400 for that action or pay a few more dollars for a Savage target action? Any input would be appreciated.

depends on what your planning to build, the difference between large and small shank should not be of concern unless your building something big in the magnums, and that extra little bit of metal around the chamber is very little gain when you think about other rifles such as Remington building magnums on almost the same shank size as the small savage.

Take off barrels in large shank are no where near as common as standard shank barrels are, this only comes into play if you are building a switch barrel or what to experiment with a bit of everything. Your basically paying for a repeater action that your likely going to invest into a after market trigger for, so add in almost 200 dollars more, now your at 600.oo and no barrel, if you want the solid rigidity of a single shot then your almost at the price point of a target action, no trigger upgrade needed, just a barrel and a stock....

But without knowing what kind of build or purpose you have in mind it is hard to steer you in any direction, all we can do at this point is spin you in circles and leave you wondering, possibly even more confused then you where before you asked the original question....

I purchased a Model 12 FT/R in 308 and with the deal came with a barrel in 6br. I want to build another rifle with that other barrel. I want to start fooling around with the 6br up to 600 yards.

buy another target action with the same action screw spacing as your ftr and share the same stock between the two rifles, you can always buy another stock down the road if you want. If you set the scope bases up the same way you can swap the scope back and forth at the same time and keep everything on a tight budget
