savage arms mk 2 f problem... should i, or can i take off the barrel?

hey, i got a savage mk 2 f that is having a problem, sometimes after i firing it, it will not extract the spent shell casing... i think the chamber is dirty but i cant see or get any tools down there cause its a bolt action rifle... is it possible to take off the barrel to give it a good cleaning and check out the chamber? i hear of people "polishing" the chamber... would this help with keeping them from getting stuck? i have tried cleaning it using regular methods but they keep on sticking... any ideas would be much appreciated :D
 
No need to take the barrel off. While holding the trigger to the rear, pull the bolt all the way rearward and out of the action. This should give you enough access to clean the chamber with normal equipment.

IIRC there are two pins holding the barrel to the receiver. Drive the pins out, then drive the barrel forward or the receiver rearward.
 
The extractor is clean, and in good order? Including underneath?
Don't know how tight the barrel is in the receiver. The tighter it is to remove the more interesting it will be to reinstall it, properly indexed.
I don't think that removing the barrel is the best course of action.
 
Check the edge of the chamber to make sure there isn't a burr on it.
Make sure the extractor tip isn't chipped or broken. I had that issue on a Savage once. Make sure the extractor slots are clean and that the extractors move freely. I had a bend extractor that was binding before to.
Try different kinds of ammo and see if the problem occurs with them.
 
Barrel isn't likely the issue, I wouln't remove it until you've exhausted the other options. How clean is the bolt face? Lots of crap can accumulate on it, beneath the extractors, etc. I have a dental pick and an old toothbrush that do a great (and quick) job of getting all the gunk out. A little Hoppe's No.9 on the toothbrush and give it hell! Under a bright light, with the pick, you can easily get to all the tight spots.

Get her clean, and inspect the extractors~my guess is that your problem is with them.

I put a new barrel on an older non-accutrigger Mk.II reciever. The barrel was a tight press fit into the receiver. I needed an arbor press to get mine out and it took better than 2000lbs of force to break it loose. There is no realistic way to remove the barrel and then re-install it without turning the fit down a bit and then using Loctite bearing setting compound to hold the barrel in place.

OP, I would look very closely at your extractors and the spring holding them before I would touch the barrel, then take a close look at the chamber with a strong light to check for burrs or other defects. The stock chamber is not very tight and should not give you any extraction problems if it is not defective and your extractors are working properly.

Yeah... dont do it. You can get the chamber really clean by chucking a rod with some COPPER scouring pad taped onto the end of it in a cordless drill. Feed it into the chamber and spin away, just be careful not to go into the rifling.

Really though i'd suspect you have fouling built up under the extractor claw. The claw opens away from the bolt when it's closed allowing crap to build up underneath it, once it builds up enough it wont have enough pressure to grab the rim of the empty.

Common issue with MKIIs. My F model did the same thing when I got it used, with about 1,000 rounds through it. Just clean the bolt thoroughly so that the extractor spring is able to move the extractor claws in and out freely. Maybe soak in Hoppe's #9...I use Ed's Red.

Then, clean the two matching recesses on the breech face where the claws rest. These two recesses can fill with powder residue and prevent the claws from solidly grabbing the cartridge rim. This is the major cause of non-extraction.

Forget barrel removal...unless you enjoy doing that sort of thing. If you wish, clean your bore the normal way, with a proper rod and guide or boresnake. Many 22 shooters clean every few thousand rounds or when accuracy falls off. Matter of fact, I haven't cleaned my 22 bores in years.

My Mark II started doing the same thing. After reading some postings over at rimfirecentral.com, I took apart the bolt assembly and did a really thorough cleaning of the whole thing as well as the breach face, etc. Before reassembling, I gave the C-clip spring a little squeeze so it would hold the extractors a little tighter.

By now, that was probably 3000 rounds ago and not a single FTE since.

i think i figgured it out... the cleaner i have been using was not made to take lead, copper or brass off of the parts... only the carbon and oil... so after a good clean with some other stuff the barrel looks much better, ill give it a try at the range and let you guys know what happes... the bolt is very clean, i just had it apart a few days ago and polished all the moving parts to make it smoother :D the extractor is fine... i cant wait to get it out to the range, i just got a new scope for it and am itching to try it out :D

I dealt with this problem on my MkII BTVS a couple years ago.

The relief in the barrel was not properly cut for the extractor. There was no way for the extractor, once worn in a bit, to grab the rim -- it would jump the rim almost all the time.

I removed the barrel and increased the recess a bit with a jeweler's file. I then made sure everything in the recess was smooth so as to keep the extractor from jumping the rim.

If you've had it for a couple years and it's worked fine up 'til now, chances are that the recess just has gunk built up in it allowing the extractor to jump the rim.

Pulling the barrel is, indeed, a last resort, but often is necessary on these rifles. While I like the Savage MkII, it does have a number of flaws, such as cheap mags that won't feed properly 100% of the time, and, at times on certain rifles, the sear slips on a regular basis.
