savage axis 2 scout 20" 7.62x39mm

I bought a new CZ 527 Carbine in 7.62x39 for $840 a few months ago (Tenda had a sale, even now they are still under $900.)

To buy an Axis when the CZ is just a little bit more would be criminal.

Not at all. Just pointing out its not a blued axis, its a stainless axis II which are worth significantly more. (not to mention, the regular blued axis goes for like $450 list price most places these days. Crazy, considering mine was only $235 after the rebate, and mine was the XP package w/scope...)

fair enough .... but it's still ugly.

Hey, nobody said it wasn't. lol The price is a total deal breaker. If it was an MSRP of $600, and built on the regular Axis not the Axis II I would be more interested, but even then, I'm not sure I've fallen for the scout rifle craze (besides, you can always build a cheap scout rifle out of a mosin if you really need one...)

Plain Savage SS Axis XP package is $509 right now at Cabela's and that includes a cheap $40-$50 scope.
$700 for the same gun with cheap irons and a scout rail is still crazy anyway you look at it.
The Sabatti is a good gun, CZ is a good gun, Howa is a good gun, you are at least getting your money's worth with those.

Axis XP doesn't include the accutrigger. Need the Axis II for that, which they charge a solid $100+ for (The Axis II XP packages come with a slightly better scope too, but thats irrelevant because this one doesnt' seem to have a scope). To me, its a total waste, and turns a cheap axis into something that is priced too high for its market. A few minutes with a spring from a pen, and a screw, and you can make the regular axis trigger perfectly usable for less than $10. (assuming you have to buy the pens and a pack of machine screws.... Or, buy a Rifle Basix for like $130 and have a way better trigger for basically the same cost. When the Axis II came out, it was retailing for $100-150 more than the Axis, when a rifle basix trigger was $89...)

Still blows me away that less than 3 years ago, an axis XP could be had for under $300 on sale (after rebate mine was about $235!) and here we are discussing a $800 Axis (even if it is a stainless, scout model of the Axis II)

I realize that I'm late on this thread but I thought it would be good to add a few comments. Personally I don't think that the Savage Axis would be my first choice. But - if I wanted that caliber, the Axis was available; and my funds were limited I might pick it up. What I would rather have is the Sabatti Rover 600. This is based on having watched the Sabatti video on the 7.62 x 39 youtube in some hunting situations and it seems like it's a great rifle that was giving a lot of thought during the development of this gun. I'm not too interested in the Axis but I may have to explore the Sabatti options further.

Older thread so maybe the OP has found his rifle of choice. Tho I do suggest looking at the Ruger American which had recently become available in 7.62x39. Great reviews so far, got one on the way. If it doesn't prove itself I will look at the CZ527.

Good luck,

tvw

The thing that I like about it is the peep sight. Are there any better options for a bolt gun in this caliber with peeps? Original or aftermarket sights?

If the Cz came with adjustable irons, and wasn't chambered for cip spec.... I would have kept mine(excessive headspace with North American ammo resulting in misfires) Honestly the savage will be a better gun with the nice peep sights, and ability to mount a scope that is out of the way of the bolt.

I own a CZ527 it's a fantastic little rifle. The Axis while having many upgraded features is not a classic gun like the CZ. If I were to choose a second rifle in 7.62x39 I would go with the Howa... Japanese finishing is good and those rifles are probably pretty accurate as the other calibers have been.

I'm sure the Axis is a decent little rifle just at the price point for such little more better rifles can be had.

I would get the Ruger American ranch over the Axis but its also quite pricey, around $700. The Mini 30 mags are appealing, however.

The Howa would be a nicer rifle than the Ruger or the Axis in my humble opinion.

The ranch is an outstanding rifle. Cheap ammo shoots great, it loves blowing flames and as mentioned Mini30 mags. Picked mine up for $599 locally.

Well I bought one and it's still in the mail. The price of these things have shot up, and unfortunately there are no reviews yet. When I looked at comparable options in stainless prices were about the same. I go it on a good sale, and hopefully it will qualify for rebates as well.

I wanted stainless and it wasn't able to find this chambering in the Howa's or Sabatti's in stainless. AXIS / II's have mixed reviews.

The upgrades, on this; Accu Trigger, Stainless, Scout Rail, Usable Sights, Muzzle Break. (no accu stock .. but why??) Are these extras worth the difference in cost? At the MSRP NO, at the price I paid, plus rebate, most certainly.

I'll eventually put this in a bedded boyds stock if it's not complete junk, if it needs it (which I don't think it will be junk, or I wouldn't have bought it).

Given sales and rebate I also got an AXIS II 308 HB, also still in the mail. If these were mistakes, you'll hear about it soon enough. I had some Ruger Americans, and these can't be worse (RA's are going for stupid prices now too).

As far as 7.62x39 goes, I like it and this should make a nice little scout rifle, with a red dot.

I'm hoping to get mine to the range this weekend. First week I got it, I couldn't go, second week fog was so thick visibility was about 20M at the range. Three weeks in I'm itching to get it out.

How do you guys like yours? I picked one up over boxing week for $570 with the rebate. Not bad. Got a little long eye scope coming for it. Should be a fun short distance plinker.

I've been playing with mine. Took the scout base off and added a standard base for regular scopes. The mag on mine was faulty, so Savage is sending me one free. Shot a nice 2" group with 5 rds of surplus @ 100yds. Sometimes I had to #### it twice to fire those hard surplus primers, so I made a spacer that I added in the firing pin spring to increase spring pressure and problem solved. The Accutrigger is good to have and it's all stainless and easy to clean. Starting to like this gun a lot.
