I’m just recently back on the boards. Life happened everything went into storage for a couple years and now I’m back. I haven’t tried to get the brake off yet.
Have you had any luck ?
I’d like to remove the brake and the front sight if possible.
I got one off a Savage Axis II Scout - heated it with a propane torch - got liquid to come out - then I could turn it - while it was hot - I held the barrel in a barrel vice and used a tool to grab that "brake" - that thing was SOLID on there. I then turned that "brake" on my metal lathe and machined it to what I thought a thread protector might look like - blued that and reinstalled it. Inside of that brake was totally packed with carbon build-up, in virtually every nook and cranny inside it and at the muzzle "target crown" recess.
I still do not think a "brake" is needed on a rifle chambered for 7.62x39, but I guess Savage marketers or buying public wanted a "brake" on there - probably for "looks".
Hi Dave, I’m not very happy with the stock that came on it, gonna try one from a newer savage axis and see if it’s any stiffer. I bought an ESS to try, but I found the 22-250 AICS mag I tried didn’t work very well
I got it off. It was a b!tch. I tried just heat. And it wouldn’t budge. I scored the side of the brake with a grinder and cracked it with a chisel. Then it unscrewed no problem.
I did knick the threads. So do this at your own risk lol.
IMO looks way better with break and front sight removed.
