Hey guys,

Time old question lol, have a buddy of mine (member here) who is looking at purchasing a 270 on a budget.
Need feedback on people who own or have history with either of these to see which would be better and if 11XP is worth the $100 difference.
Both are combo guns and both have accutrigger.

Thank you

Both good choices. IMO the trophy hunter is worth the extra 100 bucks . Bit nicer fit and finish easier to build on. Still Tupperware stock though. The axis is generally a great shooter but a bit lesser quality finish.

Many will chime in to look at a good used gun form the EE.... That is a decent option also.

I'm the buddy looking for a budget .270. I can't seem to find concrete evidence that the model 11 has the accutrigger which seems to be almost a need for a comfortable trigger pull. Savage doesn't say it does but cabela's says it does. Savage 11 http://www.cabelas.ca/product/36750/savage-11111-trophy-hunter-xp-bolt-action-rifle-w-scope and Axis II http://www.cabelas.ca/product/65461/savage-axis-ii-xp-bolt-action-rifle-w-scope I do like the idea of the shorter action because pictures I saw the bolt comes back a long ways on the Axis

I'm not sure what you were looking at on the savage site but the page I'm looking at says it does and is visible in the picture

To make sure you could call/visit Cabelas and confirm the sku number for the .270.

Skip the axis 2.

It's cheaper to buy the regular axis and get an aftermarket trigger like a rifle basix. Keep an eye on the big box stores for sales. I paid $235 for my axis XP last October, WSS had it on sale and savage was offering a mail in rebate. Can't beat it for that price. (Mine is also a 270. Love it.)

Edit : it's also possible to lighten the stock trigger by cutting a coil off the spring, or getting a new spring altogether.

Yeah there's an 11 and an 11/111 and the international trophy hunter you linked gunaddict99 is the international trophy hunter not just the trophy hunter. Also yeah like i mentioned it looks like the action on the axis II is rather long so id like a shorter one I believe. I'm very new to the hunting world guys and gals so excuse my small amount of knowledge. It's the 11/111 that im curious about because its only 90 more than the Axis and I don't know if its worth getting.

MO yes it is worth getting... Other options to consider might be a Ruger American or Wetherby Vanguard perhaps a TC venture.

I bought the 11 Fpxc pkg gun replaced the scope and trigger. Shoots MOA...better than with handloads .

If I did it over again... I'd buy a bit higher end gun like the Vanguard and get a nice scope.
Unless you like to tinker around with guns? Savage Shooters forum has tons of fixes/ tweaks for the axis.

I do love my Savage though.

I don't think there will be much difference in action size. If you were going with a 308-sized cartridge then yes, because the axis doesn't make a smaller action for that, but you are dealing with a full size action with a 270 regardless of gun.

For almost the same price as the 11/111 international trophy hunter XP, you can get a base axis, an aftermarket trigger, and a decent scope, which once put together will be the best of the bunch.

Also the axis trigger isn't that bad If you are new to shooting. If you've got experience with nice triggers you'll hate it, but you won't really like the accu-trigger either. It's a great stock trigger, but it's still garbage compared to a good aftermarket one.

the model 11/111 is a far better rifle than the axix can ever hope to be. So spend the the few extra bucks and get the model 11/111. There is also a lot more after market stuff available for the model 11/111. Also if you are looking at a 270 win it will be a model 111 which is a long action, 270 wsm will be a model 11 short action.

Ok thanks fellas, I'm open to any one else's opinions if they want to chime in but I might go for the 111. I'm new to hunting and really want to get into it because I know quite a few that do it but if for some reason I don't like it then I wont be tied up a whole bunch in a rifle. And canhunt I will look into the ruger and the weatherby too :)

I'd vote on the 11/111. I got one for the wife it's really nice compared to the axis. Myself I shoot a vanguard. Take a look and molest both, see which you like best.

Thanks nate. That's actually what my buddy / original poster suggested as well. I just wanted opinions because im fairly new and not totally sure what I'm looking for but I guess feel is a big thing/being comfortable.

Skip the Axis AND tell buddy to get a .308.

Drink whiskey and listen to appreciative slow claps from all. Friends don't let friends buy .270. ;)

Kidding aside, we just today (I'm coming back from the butcher) dropped 2 elk that were one shot with a Savage 11 in .308 (150 gem SST for those who wanna know) and a Model 111 LWH in 6.5/284. One guy uses an axis with us and hates it.
