Looking for some opinions here.

I have a chance to grab a brand new Stainless Axis in 7mm-08. $300 after the rebate.

I know the triggers are crap but plan on doing the retro spring kit as well as possibly a Boyd's down the road since I understand the factory stock is something to be desired.

Question is, how do they shoot and handle ? And, is this platform worth the effort. Kinda feel like tinkering with it.

Any and all comments welcome.

TIA

Hands down the best bang for your buck. Those savage axis' are awesome little rifles and at 300$ for a stainless model you better buy it or tell me where I can get it from...

cant go wrong for that price...I did the same a while back. Axis SS 7-08 for 299.00...got a laminate Boyds off the EE for 120.00 and put in a timney trigger, also pillar bedded into the boyds.

Can't say anything bad about it and it shoots great!! :)

Go with hornady whitetail 139gr. The savage i shot in 7mm08 loved those rounds. It hated the federal fusions.Trigger wasnt bad either.

Thx guys.

Exactly how bad is the factory synthetic stock. Like, is it a must to replace immediately or can I get away with it for awhile. Also very curious just how that factory stock feels. Read they can be rather flexible.
This Axis is the original, not the newer version with improved and redesigned stock.

The Axis is one of the stiffest actions out there for this price range. Not an elegant action but very stiff!

If you are looking for a different stock, take a peek at an MDT chassis. It will cost you almost as much if not slightly more than the rifle but it will give you the option of almost any AR type pistol grip and carbine butt stock along with a 10 round detachable magazine.

I have done 2 Axis's up in these chassis, one in .223 with a set of Iron sights I created the other with a heavy .308 barrel rechambered to 7.62 x 39mm.

It has a very thin, flimsy stock, and the ergonomics are pretty lousy, but it will still shoot fine in the OEM stock.

The factory stock is a bit flimsy but mine spends its time in the footwell of a side by side or resting on rocks/trees hunting. I don’t get upset if it gets nicked and scratched.

The only gripe I had with the original factory Axis stock was the wrist flex off bags on the bench. It was fine otherwise. A loop and 1/2 off the trigger spring made the first 2 I owned shootable in factory form.
Don't be too quick to throw money at it. Buy it and see what you think first. But for $300 do buy it.

The thin flimsy stock is perfect as my coyote rifle, not only does it shoot fine all year round, but when I'm dressed up to hunt coyotes in Saskatchewan winters, the rifle fits perfectly with all my heavy winter-wear...
