Searched a few different ways so if this is already out there let me know.

Did a barrel change today, Axis in 223 rem to a 204 Ruger barrel take off of a model 11 Savage. Did not know for sure if you could use an Axis action for other Savage small shank barrels. Thought I would like to dip into the .204 area again. and I like the support across the top of the axis action, much better than open top actions from what I have read, anyway that's my reasoning...so, Picked up a barrel here used, kudo, thanks again! Had the tools, Amazon a few years back... Works as planned, hardest part was getting the go-no-go gauges. Also the caliber info, usually on the side, ended up straight up under the scope after all said and done.
Happy Shooting!!

Savages are either Small or Large shank barrels. Large shanks were used for WSM calibers.

All are interchangeable from Axis to 110 etc. Differences are in the recoil lug design.

GST

Not all short mag were large shank I have a 300 wssm small shank here really early even pre ordered from the original owners story, kind of fried me cause I thought they were all large shank anyway we all learn and move on. To be safe have your seller measure or take a pic etc... you know the rules. Anyway latest update not all Axis threads cut are not as precise as the 10/110 etc. guns and the garbage left in the barrel nut and receiver by savage is all that can stop you from turning any barrel on. Just gross probably an ounce of shavings at least. Anyway 223 axis, 204 11 barrel .232 5 shots 100 yards, just parts but doing the same with a 22-250 cut back to 22 br.... 26-06 from Wholesale a bit ago 1.2 inch factory loads to .333 groups at 100 with Nosler 100 partitions. The Axis is only improved by an upgraded Savage barrel.... Why do I keep Remington 700,s in my safe? They are not as accurate and when you go to the range A lot of the older women say they were good....

Anyway anyone want to change a barrel on a savage or get the help they need that I was looking for I am ready too help. Just pm and we can get started. A few tools, a small investment maybe 300 bucks and you on your way.

I just swapped out a factory barrel on my Savage 112 for a new Shilen Select Match this past weekend. Same caliber (.223 Rem) but a bull profile with 1-9 twist and .252" neck.

A barrel nut wrench from GST
A barrel from Mystic
Go/No-Go gauges from Brownells

Was able to do it all on the small work bench in my laundry room.

I also have standard and magnum bolt faces to try other calibers at a later date

Axis actions proving excellent... new 204 take off, above average, better than last!!!! Starting to thread sporter barrels adding breaks and testing shows minimal variation with reduced report big time!!!

What stock is it sitting in?

Wonder how long before the axis bash crowd will chime in :)
Just got myself an axis 223 with heavy barrel. Have not yet taken
it to the range but am curious to find out how it shoots.

I bet you'll be happy. With certain factory ammo I have shot some .6-.7" groups with mine. Working up some hand loads that I hope will do even better.

Like before anyone wanting help changing Savage barrels, Head spacing or Barrel nut dealings let me know, free help here..... Pay it forward I guess I had a person help me a few years ago and that was the deal..... easy and fun!

Id like to rebarrel 3 guns once i go back to work. A 223 with a 28" heavy barrel and a 250 savage with a 18" heavy barrel. Both will end up in mdt chassis. Lss for the 250 and ess for the 223
I havent bought an action for these yet im debating using an axis or wait for a stevens or savage action to come up cheap
The other is a 2506 i have with a burnt out barrel. Its a stevens 200

That is a very generous offer Sussex and the firearms community needs people like you.

I like to "accumulate" a few winter projects to do when it is -40 and a blizzard outside. Then I go into my heated shop and tinker. In the past I have assembled a few Mauser 96's in 6.5x55 and they have turned out excellent. Great caliber btw.

In the past year I have "accumulated" a few Savage rifles, some barrels, plus the necessary tools and gauges on the EE here. My plan is to rebarrel a few Savage model 110's in .243 into 7-08, 260 Rem and if I am ever able to find a Savage barrel in Sav. 250. Might just have to custom order that one. I am still brain tinkering with the idea of a 225 Win barrel as well.

So there is every chance that you may receive a cry of "HELP" from me Sussex. :)
Dave.

The Savage is a fairly easy swap. Did a couple myself very successfully. Very happy with the results.

For something a bit more difficult, I put a No4 barrel on a No1 Lee Enfield. Very pleased with the result. Because I had to take material off the receiver end of the barrel to index the ejector groove, I had to ream the chamber slightly. I now have a SAMMI spec chamber with the bolt correctly head spaced.

Is there any problem swapping in a standard sized Savage tang safety? The huge Axis safety is butt ugly. And the stock is next to useless but easily replaceable. I don't understand why Savage put a worse stock on an Axis than even their rimfire rifles.
