Hey guys, i bought a savage axis for deer season this year in .270 win. i was shooting 130 gr rem core-lokts and gettin about 1.5-2 in @100 yards. What ammo do you find works good in it? i found after about 3 shots the barrel is VERY hot and cant hit the broad side of a barn. Does anyone else have this problem or is it just me?

This is not uncommon. Suggest buying Win and rem factory ammo in 140gr and 130 gr. Factory ammo is not tuned to your barrel so you need to find the brand and bullet weight your barrel likes. So if you are getting 1.5 your good enough to go hunting. If you want to try premium ammo, it may or may not fare any better. The only way to get the most out of your barrel is hand loading.

Also, trigger adjustment helps tons. You may want to look at an upgrade or adjustment to better the trigger control. Factory adjustments are rather let say poopey.

Also, thin factory barrels heat up quickly. Three shot under a minute or two is very fast shooting even for a skinny barrel. So let her cool down a bit between strings and or shots. My two bits.

Yeah, i dont "rapid" fire, but ill shoot 2 shots (1 shot every 2 mins) so 2 shots in 4 mins and in between shots the barrel is still very warm. Eventually i will probably upgrade trigger and what not, but i find my trigger is pulling nicely at about 4lbs (+/-). I will be trying winchester super x and federal "blue box" 130 and 150 gr.

Have you tried modifying the factory trigger? lots of threads popping up about that. Apparently it is quite easy to drop it too 2-2.5 lbs.

Oh, and H4L,

Do you have another rifle that you can consistently shoot better than 1.5" at 100 yards? If you do [and you certainly may for all I know], then you can blame the Axis for not shooting well enough.

If you don't, then you may want to get someone who you are confident is a good shooter to give your rifle a few shots before you decide the rifle/ammo isn't up to task.

Dont forget the basics as well, take off scope and tighten/lock tite bases, tighten rings, ensure barrel is not touching anywhere on stock. It seems the monkeys at the assembly stage are run a bit ragged, mine rings were not evenly spaced, the bases were ok, but I always retighten and use blue locktight. Hope this works well for you. I see Timney has a solution for the trigger, but just may take some time to be available. I modified the trigger but very much agree you must know what you are up to and be willing to negate any warrantee. Also risk some other more important issues. Always do a slam and drop test to ensure you have enough sear engagement, unloaded of course.

Cheers.

Both my axis' like hornady ammo (one in 223 & one in 30-06). Could give that a try. Also my grouping got alot better after installing my timmey triggers. Not sure what to say about the barrel getting hot in 3 shots. I can take 5-6 shots(30-06) and 25+(223) before its noticeably hot.

My .223 Axis likes Winchester White Box .223. It grouped ontop of each other a 25 yards. Going to the range in Feb., and I'll try it out to a 100 yards.

Try the Federal Premium. In both my Savage's, .270 and .223, that has been the best factory load so far. The Remington Core Loks were absolute garbage in my .270, I get better accuracy with a sling shot at 100 yards while drunk and blindfolded than I do with that stuff.

I went over the rings, scope bases stock and all. Everything looks good. i dont really want to tinker with the trigger myself, id rather pay someone 80 bucks who knows what their doing. Im going to try some different ammo some time and see if that helps at all. My buddy has same gun and said he shoots the federal "blue box" (can never remember what it actually is!!) in 150gr and getting like .98" @100 yards. but once again he said the barrel after 3 shots over 4-5 mins is very hot.

And yeah, my Savage 17 hmr does .75" @ 100 yards. My dads savage 243 i can do .5 @ 100yrds with handloads done by my neighbor. He is also going to handload me some shells to try

If you're going to pay 80 bucks to get someone to replace the spring you could get the rifle basix trigger for not much more. I think before a scope swap or any improvements that will be my first move. I bet it will be the biggest improvement for the dollar you can make on this combo.

That's kinda what im thinking too. The scope isnt bad, but needs to be upgraded eventually. Itd be a good 22 scope

I picked up a used Axis I was given some Win white box. I may pick up some Hornadys tomorrow.

Anyone have issues upgrading to a new scope with the bolt hitting it? I noticed with my Axis that when the bolt is opening it has a 1/4 inch or less to play with. Darn tight!

I put a bushnell 3200 elite 4-12x50 on my 30-06 with no problems at all. I did use the rings that came with the rifle as well

Axis LOOOOVES Hornady!

Both my Axis .25-06 and my .223 love the Hornady Superformance ammo... My .308 hasn't arrived yet, so I can't comment on it.

It shot pretty good with the Federal Fusion (.25-06) and the .223 likes winchester whitebox...

i've bubba'd the trigger in the .25-06, the .223 seems to be considerably lighter. I bought one as well in .308 for my father, his trigger is horrible as well, but will shoot multiple bullets through a ragged hole at 100 yards.

seems the bigger calibers heat the barrel considerably faster... my .25-06 is hot by the time I get the mag empty... lol...
