Savage Axis Barrel

I'm not an authority on gun barrels...but seeing your question going unanswered is bugging me a little. 
I do have a Precision 10 .223, and talked my nephew into an Axis in .223 last Christmas. I've shot both, and CAN tell you that my gun..costing more than 2x more, doesn't seem to print a whole lot better. I'm no match shooter, but have been shooting almost twice as long as my nephew has been alive, and he can damn-near shoot his Axis as well as can shoot my Precision 10~as hard as that is to admit. I'm reloading now, gaining some ground on the SOB, but that Axis is a very impressive shooter for the money when fed Hornady 55gr. V-Max. I'm not sure how you'd determine whether factory barrel X is better than factory barrel Y coming from the same company, but if you're having an reservations about a .223 Axis shooting well, I wouldn't if I were you. I saw many groundhogs fall to that gun, wearing a mediocre scope and a rickety Harris knock-off bipod!

All the savage barrels come from the same bin. High dollar rifles dont get any better barrel then the cheapo ones do

This has upset several owners of more expensive firearms including myself. I bought one in .223 last January when they were one sale and it was $302 to my door. How it shoots close to rifles and scopes 10 times the price is a mystery. If they didn’t look so crappy I bet they would even be more popular. You can’t say it looks even close to as nice as a Model 10.
Yep, I've had a few Savages, and my Axis shoots just as well as the more expensive ones do. I had a Precision Carbine in .223 and my .25-06 Axis shot just as tight (both shooting factory ammo, the Axis seems to like every factory load I've tried so far), and thats comparing the light contour Axis to the heavy barrelled carbine. Obviously this is comparing them both after a few consecutive groups, the heavy barrel would probably hold tighter once things started getting really hot, but my Axis seems to do well with a hot barrel too. I'm going to take me Axis out with me next range trip, and bring my Savage BATS-K as well, and see how they do lol.

Mine(axis) shoots real good with a hot barrel as well. Doesnt seem to matter if you are shooting a load it likes. If I am plinking with it doesn't take long to put 50 rounds down it and it gets pretty darn warm. Just the other day was shooting shotgun shells at 200 with the 223 and the hmr.
Ya, I've shot a few boxes of 85, 100, and 117 grain, of different brands, and all produce sub-MOA groups in my 25-06, seems to really like the Hornady Superperformance (117 SST) stuff, but Rem Core-Lokts (100gr) aren't far behind, I've found an issue with Winchester loads though, so I'm not longer using them. I can't believe I paid $299 for this thing, I originally bought it as a back-up hunting rifle (and because I wanted to try the caliber). I need to start reloading though, it's getting pricey. Is your HMR a Savage as well?
