Looking at putting together a new hunting rig , thinking of a axis in a Boyd's stock , love the thumb hole stocks from Boyd's ! Figure a axis would be a good action to build on , only thing is the bolt handle , it's ugly as fack! Lol , are there any replacements out there for this ?? Thanks

The whole action is ugly as sin.... I'd probably look at something like a Vanguard or Howa for the price you are going to be into an Axis ($350) plus Boyds ($250+).

Yes.... Weatherby vanguard..... Or howa 1500....... If your strategy is to get a cheap rifle and dump a whack of cash into it to make it what you want, you are going the wrong way and will spend way more in the long run.....

Don't get me wrong, the axxis is plenty accurate out of the box.... But the action is the most important part of a hunting rifle..... Or any rifle IMOP..... Buy an axxis and you aren't starting solid ..... If you truly want to build, focus on action first and all else second....

So perhaps a Savage model 10/11 would be the better action to start with? Just my two cents as I'm also in the same boat, looking for something decent to build upon but not too steep to get into right from the get go

I will be honest, I am not a builder...... I am a hunter..... Although I feel a build is in my future just because I like guns....

I am not a savage fan, nor am I fan of bolting a bunch of ridiculous crap onto a hunting rifle (keep in mind this is the hunting and sporting forum)....

That being said, any "build" requires a solid action to build on.... If someone feels the axxis provides that, then that is their perogative.... (Keep in mind that solid feed equals a solid mag system).... And there should be no cheap metal in the action....

For all things Savage Axis try tha savage shooters forum. If it can be done to an axis it will have been done there. Apparently they make pretty sweet build guns. From barrels, to brakes to triggers to bolt handles the list is endless! Not sure if it's the best action to build on but many guys have and have made super good shooters!

Doesn't make much sense to buy a cheap gun and replace everything wrong to make it right. Replacing bolt handle, trigger, stock ect. Before you know it you have a 1000$ axis. $1000 and axis are two words that should never be used together. When you want to upgrade it(and you will) it is worth almost nothing. Definitely upgrade to a model 11 or better if you must have savage. Savage Model 14 in a Boyds would be my choice in Savage. IMHO vanguard s2 with a thumbhole stock and your done. Remington or Browning make nice guns with thumbhole for much less.

It seems to be fun for builders to turn a cheap $260.00 axis rifle in to a tac driving machine. The cost seems secondary for most.

I don't disagree..... But the axxis is fairly accurate out of the box....... So making it a "tack driver" isn't the issue...... It's all of the other slop and grind and plop that needs worked out that makes me scratch my head.... Boyd's are nice.... But they are not a precision stock......

I don't get the "sleeper" mentality...... Like spending a fortune building a Ford tempo that can outrun a 5 liter mustang..... When you can just buy a vette for cheaper and have something of value and not be driving around in a tempo.....

I ended up using metal/epoxy/putty to form a new handle. Not for looks however, just to beef it up a bit. I always felt tempted to put my winky up when working the bolt :) I feel the same way about the stock handle on a 10/22, it's just so wee and tiny, and I don't have monster hands...

I've got 2 of these plinkers, they shoot really well for the $$.

Glades Armory makes great replacement tactical bolt knobs for the axis

My bad, for some reason I mistook the MKII for the axis. I'm going to blame a stroke or small aneurysm. Too bad too, I was looking at that link going "oooh those are really affordable". I have a 10TR with the big "Tactical" handle and it's fantastic. :)
