I've experienced good accuracy from both the cheapo Savage and Remington rifles, though they're both a little rough around the edges and the stocks are ####. If I were looking for one I'd be tempted to do as looky suggests and take a gander at that Ruger. Just seems like a bit more rifle to my eyes.

It'll hunt just fine. I think you're on the right track leaning toward the 7mm-08 or 308. For bigger game those two are really the best way to go.
They are great rifles for the money. I bought a couple last year in 25-06 and 270 (they were really cheap). Both shoot really good at the range with the 270 averaging about a 1'' 3 shot group at 100 yards and the 25-06 shooting sub 0.75'' consistently. I had 3 youth at the range then carrying that rifle this fall, they ended up firing 2 shots hunting resulting in 2 quick kills. Great little rifle. I did adjust the trigger a touch after purchase, took 10 minutes and resulted in a nice shooter.
