Savage Axis in .243

Was out with some friends shooting the Axis again at 350 yards. Still shooting wonderfully. I really want to get a nicer scope on the rifle but the stock scope still hasn't failed me! I've been abusing the scope to no end to give me an excuse to buy something better, but the damn thing hasn't even budged, it's still perfectly sighted in.

Also bagged a buck with the rifle this year as well.

"...Came with a cheap Bushnell scope..." Not if it's a new package rifle. Savage uses Simmons. Not that it matters. A cheap Bushnell is better than a Simmons anyway.
"...not sure why you settled for..." A .243 isn't settling. Not having the bucks is reason enough.
Savasge Axis. 1 in 9.25 twist. Heavy bullets.

My rifle came with a clearly marked "Bushnell" scope :p

They were all Bushnell scopes on the Axis rifles when I bought mine.

My greatest prodigy, my friend Sarah. 325 yards. Took her 4 shots to hit the pop can. First three shots missed by an inch each time. She has only gone out shooting a handful of times.

Good to see you and your friend having a great time and enjoying the axis rifles....I've got two of the bushnel scopes that come with the savage packages, both from the 111 model package guns. My son put a pretty good dent in one when he dropped the rifle and the other is now on the wifes M70 winchester 243, both are working fine. From what I read on these forums I was expecting these scopes to fall into a least 3 pieces the first time they where subjected to recoil. So far they seem to be standing up pretty good!

I still have people telling me the scopes are complete junk and to replace it right now. I'm more than please with these rifle and scope combos!

The scope on my wifes gun originally came on a model 111, 300wm....I removed the bushnel and installed a Swarovski 3-12x56 scope....go figure, I had to send the Swarovski in for warranty and the bushnel package scope is still working fine.

Well I figured to update this thread. Loved my .243 Axis that I went out bought another Axis. This is a stainless steel barrel with the same Bushnell scope as my .243! Brand new unfired for $390 shipped. Can't beat that. Wanted something in .308 so people can't ##### when I go hunting bear or moose like I did with my .243 :p

Methinks that is a great price for a .308 bolt rifle in Stainless, congrats.

Especially one that is brand new in box with the tags still hanging off it :D

Cabelas wasnts $430 plus taxes and shipping and my local gun store wants something like $515 plus taxes for the same rifle.

The only real problem I have with the Axis is the trigger. Other bothersome features would be the stiff bolt lift, thumb coming into contact with the scope when opening the bolt, stock flex and general ugliness. That being said I have two and they are not going anywhere anytime soon. One is my Coyote rifle in 223 with a Rifle basix trigger. I don't treat it very well, but it in turn treats me very well indeed. Bought a second in a youth stock in 7mm-08 to get the wife hunting/shooting it's great and light wieght and for some reason the trigger seems a lot better than my 223 was.

I'm sure you will be happy with it.
George

Savage has addressed the main weakness of the Axis...the trigger. 2014 production Axis rifles will include the Accutrigger...so a good polishing of the bolt and contact points will be all the new Axis rifles need to be pretty decent rifles!
