Savage Axis or Remington 770?

Hey, looking to buy a deer gun on a budget. I have narrowed it down to the Savage Axis or the Remington 770. I want a bolt action rifle, with factory mounted sights, and they are in the same price range. Having read what I can, I totally realize that neither of these are great guns, but I am just starting out, and could use some input. Cheers!

Check out this price then.

$329 for a model 11 with scope, no accutrigger though. Remove spaces between // and ca

Just read the rst of the post and see you are looking for 270 seems they only have this in 243. Which is a good deer and yote round. Not so good if you may go after larger game in the future. They have other sales though. Mail order is ok from my experience.

I have an Axis in 223 ir shoots very well for hunting rig and trigger isnt that horrible in stock form.

Savage Axis. If they run out, don't buy the 770. Save up a bit more and get a Stevens 200 instead or a Marlin XL/XS7 and get sights put on it. Or get a Handi-Rifle. Don't buy a 770. Some people report being happy with their 710 or 770, but there are too many who have complained for a leading manufacturer like Remington to be getting money for them.

I'd opt for the Savage Axis or Stevens 200 over the Remington 710/770. I'm a hardcore Remington fan, but the 710/770 wouldn't make a decent boat anchor. If you keep your eyes open you can find a decent deal on a good used Remington 700. Another option is a sporterized Lee-Enfield. Parker-Hale and Churchill both did very high quality commercial sporters using the Lee-Enfield action. They can be had for very reasonable prices in the EE.

This is a great deal if you can find one in your desired caliber (maybe call the WSS stores and see if they have one hiding in the back somewhere?)

However I will also suggest the Savage 11/111 Trophy Hunter XP, I know its $200 more, but honestly, it will save you that much in the long run.

For the extra $200 you get an actual serviceable Weaver scope with Ballistic-X reticle, decent rings/bases, the awesome Savage accu-trigger, and an overall better built rifle with a lot of upgradeability.

I bought a 111FCXP3, and I love the rifle, and don't regret buying it at the price I got it at (same as that WSS deal). However just like everyone constantly says, the scope/rings/bases are junk, I thought I could deal with them, but it was pointless. You will want at the very least to change the rings (and probably bases), to ensure you hold zero (I couldn't with the stock ones on my 30-06), so take that into consideration.

I know we all have budgets, but if you can figure out a way to stretch yours that extra $200 go check out the Trophy Hunter XP, if not, skip the Axis and try and see if you can get that 111FCXP3 from WSS, its a good gun for the money.

Yeah, that is a fantastic deal on the 111 at wholesalesports, but the .243 is not going to cut it I don't think. Kinda have my heart set on a .270 or 7mm-08. But thanks for pointing me in their direction, they have some fantastic prices.

Axis or Marlin...but no way in hell would I recommend a 770. I have an axis in .223 and with some breakin the rifle has definitely smoothed out. Also, out of the box accuracy is great...if you can get used to the relatively heavy trigger. Don't forget to handle a few to see what feels best for you...that is a major variable in this choice. Good luck to ya!

I think Al Flahertys a site sponsor here also has a great price on a savage they may have the 270 you want.

Please don"t buy the 710/770 I did and wish I hadn't!!!!! Look to the Axis and do the trigger job. Predator Masters site has the trigger fix for the axis cost about $5.00 and 15 min time. I think there is a video on youtube also!

If you want go 1 to step up then go to the 11/111 savage pkg rifles. The XP hunter pkgs have an up graded scope and the accu-trigger installed for about $525.00.

If you like tinker then buy a stripped down stevens 200 and build your own dream gun. tonnes of aftermarket parts avaliable !

inmo.... buy the savage pkg guns over the axis

P.S. You can have a look at the RUGER american also but I think they really just ripped off savage but you can decide for youself.

Well, after lots of reading and a little bit of youtube, I see my best option is clearly the savage. They are both the same price at wholesalesports. That is unless something good pops up on the EE sooner. Thanks all.

I'd say savage. Now i could be a little biased as i own an axis and a 111, but if you want an out of the box shooter, savage has it down. From the reviews I've read the Remington is garbage.

if all you are wanting is a hunting rifle or something for back yard plinking, you can't go wrong with the axis, out of the box it is a little stiff, but its a new gun. blast a couple hundred rounds and oil the bolt good and it gets smoother.

the 111 is definitely a better rifle, for about 100-200 more depending on which model/package you get hunter or trophy, they both are out of the box alot smoother then the axis.

X2, I was looking at the Axis, but chose the 111 instead. I didn't like the weird skinny wrist grip or the plastic mag on the Axis.

Thanks again for pointing me in the wholsalesports direction. I ended up getting the marlin XL7 in a laminated stock for only 379. Its on sale from 489, but I think laminated stock and walnut stock are only available on long action rifles. Either way, 379 for this gun is better than I ever expected!!!

Sometimes these threads are actually useful! You picked up absolutely the best entry-level bolt action gun available. Not to mention at a very attractive price. Where did you get it for that price?

Have you considered buying used, there always seems to be a good price on a hunting rifle somewhere.

+1 alot of pre loved rifles for sale, passed on simply to upgrade or lack of use

EDIT*****

Nevermind this, i see you purchased a Marlin, Definatley a better choice from those you first opted for, hope it fulfils your needs, A little report about the rifle in a few outings would be awesome!
