Savage Axis or Ruger American and what is a good caliber .270 or 30-06

I agree with boomer as well.
Having a model 77 or one of the better Savage rifles in either the 270 or 30-06 would be the way to go.
A Model 70 feather weight would be a great way to go as well.
Spend a little more on a good used blued steel and walnut rifle and I think you are better off.
Quality over quantity is what I am doing this year, will be culling the heard once I look at what to keep and what to trade off.
Sorry the model 70, 270 is already gone.

PS just checked the EE and there is a Remington 700 in 270 for $565.

That's what I did, 14 rifles went to good homes and 1 faulty Kel-Tec was donated, free of charge, to Vault Distribution. My collection is smaller, but nicer and more reliable.

My son bought a Ruger American in 30-06 from LeBarons a couple of months ago. Nice rifle, he loves it, and he shoots close to MOA with it at the range. It is a VERY good rifle for he money. Best part....$339. !

Had some fun with an Axis a last winter. It is surprisingly tough, reliable and functional. For a hunting rifle, it will do anything you could want BUT it does look very homely even for a Savage lover like me.

I then bought a Ruger American in 30-06. Shot well. Recoil was brisk and I installed a muzzle brake. functioned really well and the feeding was buttery smooth. Ther eare some custom rifles that could learn a thing or two about the feeding of this rifle.

There is no shortage of plastic but good quality modern stuff that will last a lifetime of abuse. forend is typical flexy so you open up the channel and all is well.

Love the trigger and short bolt lift. Looks great although surface finish was soft. I call it my budget Tikka. Sub MOA no problem. Chamber vs action lock up was not as straight as I would have liked so case life was reduced. For the fire and forget hunter, it wouldn't matter one bit.

Of the two, I would go RA as it looks so much nicer and I love that short bolt lift and buttery feeding.

I would certainly wait for a compact in 7-08 as my ideal hunting rifle. For now, I will just use a Savage as the other two have gone to other homes.

I'd go .270, it shoots a bit flatter than the 30.06, recoils less, and with 150 grain Nosler Partitions or Accubonds it'll handle elk just fine as well.
As far as rifles go, the Axis is getting the Accutrigger this year so it'll have a good trigger, which was it's weakness...and the Ruger American is
coming out in stainless, which makes a good all-round budget rifle just that much more attractive.
