Was at the local gun show today, saw a blued composite Savage with DM and scope for $350 (bargained down priced) from $395. Great shape, it was. Seller said it was used very very little. This was in 7mm-08. I wanted a rifle in 243 for my middle son. Was this indeed a bargain price? Next question, is there any factory light loads available in 7mm-08? This son is not used to shooting and absolutely hates recoil! I know the 7-0-8 is not a kicker per say, but I think he would appreciate a 243 much better. The rifle will mostly be used as pest control on a small acreage. He now lives 2 miles away from a vast forest. I am not a Savage fan by any means, but this is just gonna be a bargain buster rifle with a specific use in mind. I have the seller's card and can still buy that rifle. What should I do? Thanks in advance for your replies.

I dont know about the light loads, but as far as pricing... seems about average. Not exactly a steal, but not a ripoff either.

Theres several on the EE right now, even 1 in stainless (.243) for $375. Ive seen some pop up on the EE in stainless for $350 shipped, and some of the blued ones come up for $300 shipped - gotta be fast on those deals as they dont last long.

I believe the XP is the abbreviation used for the package(ie; rifle and scope). As for the price, I'm not sure its that great of a deal. New the XP's go for around $339.00 at Cabelas. I picked up a Axis XP SS here on the EE for $300 shipped, and the round count was very low. Basically new condition. Personally, I would keep looking for that .243, at a better price point. I would think $275 to $300 in like new condition, and maybe $250 to $275 in good condition.

There's a decent deal on the EE right now, .243 Axis SS with one piece rail for $375 shipped. Maybe you could haggle over the price and sweeten the deal? Either way it's not a bad deal!

1) My local store sells the XP (Rifle/Scope Combo) or $529.99 plus taxes for the Stainless Steel Barreled model.

2) Cabelas sells the same model for $439.99 plus taxes and shipping.

3) A used model should run no more than $350 shipped for an XP with the original scope.

4) I picked up a brand new in box Stainless Steel XP combo on our EE for $390 shipped

2) Cabelas sells the same model for $439.99 plus taxes and shipping.
Not sure where you are getting your info from, but cabelas has them for $359. You can also buy a youth model for that price.

Or you can buy one for $339 from Wholesale and get it shipped for $26 like I did. At any rate I would not purchase a used one for $350 unless it was exactly what I wanted.

Edit: I see now you thought he was looking at a Stainless. Read the original post again. "Blued composite"
