Since it is understood that the "package deal" scopes and rings are absolute garbage, and HAVE to be replaced with something remotely reliable........
Can these Savage AXIS rifles be bought anywhere without having to pay for the JUNK that is obviously included??
I don't understand why these rifle makers put these guns out there with a JUNKY, forced to buy scope which obviously adds money to the bottom line, including the ridiculous "Factory boresighting" that is useless on a rifle that has to be shipped and banged around, yet must take resources at the factory to do. (like anyone is gonna take their gun out of the box and go hunting with it cause Savage says it boresighted the scope for ya!! No chance that a crappy scope mounted with crappy rings will be "on" after it is banged around in shipping.
My point is................who wants to pay extra for something you couldn't possibly want??? Can these rifles be bought cheaper without the scope and rings? I'd prefer to spend that money on different optics. It is the sole reason I haven't bought one yet, and wont until I see them available without an included scope. Anyone know if they are available cheaper as a "Stand alone" rifle??

First 2 places I looked sell the savage axis without the scope and I'm sure I could find a bunch more. :)

Le baron : AXIS Black Synthetic : $291

Le baron : AXIS Stainless : $342

Dante Sport : AXIS Black Synthetic $287

Depending on the caliber, available funds, ones own expectations and what you are going to do with the rifle, these package scopes are not always total garbage. They can be fine for a range plinking gun to get people started shooting.

EDIT: checked a third place, Ellwood Epps has them for $297

It's just that I have several quality scopes just sitting around on my bench and no rifles to put them on currently. If the accuracy of the axis is as good as most that I've seen, then it will be fine for a cheap range plinker. I just refuse to use junky scopes after putting up with them for years and getting nothing but heartache when they would crap out or fog up at the worst possible time.

Agreed, if you already have a scope or have the cash then there is no reason to entertain a low quality scope like the ones on these package rifles.

I just mention that they are not total garbage because some people buy these cheap savages because they can't afford anything else and adding another few hundred dollars is out of the question.

Anyway, what caliber are looking at?

BTW, I own a couple of cheaper savages but no axis.

I was gonna pick up a .223 and possibly a .308 just for the range. I have a couple of Bushnell Elite 4200's and a Leupold VXII 4-12 just sitting there, (I know the recoil of a .223 most likely wont knock out even these el-cheapo scopes, but why bother. Plus the lack of clarity from the lenses alone will make me nauseous.)
I just think its a waste of money to force you to buy these in a package form. (Not so much now that I know they are available separately too)

The rifle shoot good ( got a 243 for my grandson ) just change the ring for leopold ones and put a Redfield Revolution 4X12X40, this is a pretty good set up and very accurate... JP.

For a truck gun they are excelent and I have never had any trouble with the scopes supplied. even my 270 never disturbed the scope.

its only the uptight equipment snobs that get themselves so wrapped up in the scope

Lebarons .ca ships, and there really cheap there. IMHO i feel its worth spending a little bit more and get a weatherby vanguard or t/c venture though. I was going to buy a axis in 223 for coyote, until i handled one. They might shoot good, but they feel really cheap, and they cycle pretty rough, i thought. Handle a $350 axis, and a $500 vanguard back to back, and u will see what a extra $150 makes...... You can't beat the price of a axis, but it costs you more in the long run if you end up selling it for a loss, and buy something of better quality a couple months later.....Just my .2cents

Yes they are cheap but they do shoot good, upgrade the rings and scope and you are in business with a good rig, but going for a Venture or Wheatherby is a good move to... JP.

should be getting my Axis this week...I'm gonna use the mounted scope for a bit, until I either A) Get the funds to replace the stock glass or B) I receive the Trijicon 5-20x50 AccuPoint my GF has been hinting at for X-mas.

(like anyone is gonna take their gun out of the box and go hunting with it cause Savage says it boresighted the scope for ya!! No chance that a crappy scope mounted with crappy rings will be "on" after it is banged around in shipping.

Is this a serious question? I have spent many weekends out at the club range on Hunter Sight In days. There is always at least one person a year who arrives with a new rifle/scope or a new scope installed and can't understand why it doesn't just shoot one shot holes. The words, "But it said it was sighted in and they sent me a target to prove it!" or, "The gunsmith told me he boresighted it so what is wrong with it?"

Remember, there are all kinds of people out there and most of them know diddley about weapons or shooting, let alone hunting. I always ask them where they will be hunting that year and stay out of that area.

A guy at work just bought one with the scope and was asking for advise before going shooting. I told him the best thing he could do is pull the mounting system apart and locktite everything back together with appropriate torque to hold it all together. The scopes are junk, but they'll work okay-ish as long as you don't beat the crap out of them.

Oh, and if you are buying an Axis, why worry about what's on it? I own inexpensive rifles and they have Accutriggers on them. Now, I'd rather pay for that, than an Axis...

I have lots of good guns, I am looking for a reasonably good gun that I don't care enough about to loan out. And to occasionally plink with , especially if I'm taking new people to the range. I also have a couple of Howa's and a Venture and know they are good guns. But The venture cost me $622 I think. I don't remember , but if an axis can be had for under $300, then I might look at one. Or two.

i bought mine wthout the scope and put a better (but by no means fantastic) scope on it. got it at lebaron but have seen them in other stores selling without the scope.

My wife just bought a savage 111 that came with a lower end Bushnell scope. It's a model 76-3945 which from google is a 'bushnell sharpshooter'. Not a lot of info on them as I assume these are some sort of specialty wholesale scope. Going to give it a try here hopefully this week and see how it shoots. If it's crap I'll buy her a VX-2 or something and put this one on my .22lr.
