Well curiosity got the better of me and I had to see for myself how good/bad these rifles are. It seems like Savage has a pretty loyal following and an equally strong contingent of people who dislike them. When I saw that this combo was 249 at WSS I couldn't resist finding out for myself.

Initial thoughts in store: It isn't that ugly! I was half expecting that I would become nauseated at first sight of this rifle from the description of some people on here. It is very light, with a decent recoil pad and a nice matte finish on the barrel that will be perfect for my intended use. But those scope mounts sure look cheesy. When I checked the bolt I did pick a unit with the least amount of play as you cycled the action but noticed that all the rifles I tried had this in common. They all seemed to have the sticky bolt lift.

Got it home: After initial disassembly this was by far the dirtiest rifle I have brought home new in the box. The forend looks like I will have no problem epoxying in something to stiffen it. I am not as sure how I will add some weight to balance that to the stock as I cant tell how to get the pad off. Reassembled I watched some hockey and continually cycled the action noticing that it got better after cleaning, and continued to improve the more it was worked. At this point I am still skeptical of the scope mounts.

Took it shooting: The very first round I attempted to cycle into the rifle jammed when leaving the magazine on the throat of the barrel. Not a great feeling! This proved to be an issue with about 1 in every 5 rounds. Some reading suggests that some modification of the magazine lips should fix this (anyone with tips here it would be greatly appreciated) I am assuming this issue is similar to the old savage 22wmr magazines that need to be fiddled with to suit each rifle.

The other issue with the magazine that comes down to user error is that one group I thought the magazine was fully inserted and the rifle wouldn't pick up a round from the magazine. Giving some strong pressure on the bottom of the mag I heard the little pop sound of the plastic clip fully engaging its latch. It is something I am now fully aware of for future use. I feel like buying some extra mags would be a good idea.

When settling in to shoot I thought about how nicely this rifles palm swell was contoured for shooting from a rest. I later noticed that shooting offhand is nice with a second contour for this purpose.

The first shot was right of the target at 50 yards. (it sure is nice watching hits in the scope, glad I didn't get a second 22-250) The second shot was on the paper holding on the left edge of the 8" target. With subsequent shooting the rifle was sighted in at 50 yards and then taken out to 100. My last 5 shots were measured at 1.152 inches. This I think is very good for a 250 dollar rifle and value pack ammunition. I was going to be happy starting off anything under 2 moa. I look forward to loading up some Speer TNT and Varmint grenade loads to see what kind of repeatable accuracy is attainable with this rig.

The trigger on this gun is heavier than what I would ideally like, but it is not as bad as internet reviewers had me fearing. I may switch out the coil to a lighter gauge but think eventually a rifle basix trigger will find a home in my Axis.

To summarize my initial review this gun is a shooter. It isn't the prettiest safe queen out there but has great potential in the right hands. The scope is not great but it is workable until a person could put something better on. If anyone has recommendations on how to best fix the magazine, or stiffening the stock let me know as I would greatly appreciate the advice. I will probably continue to post as I shoot the new rifle with any updates on accolades or issues.

So you got a .223?

I cut some of the spring off of my trigger and it's 100x better.

Interesting that you had magazine issues. I lock mine in all the time and haven't had a failure or even anything close to a loading failure. After you figured out of the positive locking sound did you continue to have issues?

Before I tried one in 223..

I thought it was a good entry level rifle, until you decided upgrade.

After I tried it...

I would save up until I could buy something better designed(for the 223 cartridge), and of better quality...NO JOKE!

Yes I bought a 223. When the magazine makes that audible pop sound the bolt will pick up a round every time. But shooting hollow points they still were jamming a bit. Doing some research it looks like this happens to some savage magazines and I just need to do some tweeking.

I think at 250 this gun will prove to be a great value and I will be happy with it. I do want to get a CZ 527 varmint at some point but this rifle has good entertainment value while I save coin for that. I could give this away or sell it cheap to someone looking to get into shooting at a minimal loss dollar wise when I upgrade.

I would have to agree with Captioned , wish i would have put a little more coin towards an sps maybe . But in all fairness the Axis is showing great promise , first thing i did was dump the scope and rings .

Replaced them with a set of med weaver grand slams and a leupold vx1 4-12 . Then proceeded to trim off more of the trigger spring than i care to mention here . Great improvement for thetrigger !

I tried some winchester 40 grn hp , what a dissapiontment . Then a box of 50 grn american eagle hp's , they were impressive 1 3/16 group out of those . next i get some die's some varget and some 55 grn blitz kings .;)

I picked up a stainless model in 22-250 today, blued were sold out. I did have to tighten all of the mounting screws on the scope. I'm hoping to shoot it tomorrow. Other than the spongy trigger I have no complaints for the price.

This spring my candy store will have in left hand too. His predelivery booking price is just under $290. I might order one in 308. I like my edge in 223 shoots right around 1". Can't ask for much more at that price.

Good to know about the stud. I don't regret the purchase at all and look forward to going head to head with a buddy's sps varmint.

On my 223 I still have the scope rings and bases that came with the xp. Shoots under an inch easy at 100. Mine loves hornady superformance 53gr vmax. I am working on some habdloads at the moment.

Just picked one up today for a family member. After over 50 years shooting I have to say it is a great value for the money. It isn't a select grade fancy hand checkered walnut stock with a deep rich blued barrel and action, and it doesn't cost a Thousand dollars either.

I hear/read lots about the trigger, but for me I don't find it objectionable at all. Also there are lots of neg coments on the scopes and mounts. The good thing is they have a lifetime warranty, so they can't be all that bad. If you realy don't like the scopes and or mounts, just bundle them up and mail them to me. I have a few guns that I will store them on.I will even pay the postage.:)

They use the same action for all the calibres so I think the feed problem comes down to the action being too large for the small bullet. To compensate for that they then machine the ejection port too small atleast for my big hands.

Incidentally the "sloppy" bolt is intentional it leaves the bolt head free floating so you get better accuracy and lock up

The scopes and rings work great and I have never had a failure on any of mine, and yes I do own much more expensive guns and scopes but I don't think they shoot any better

And in my opinion they are a perfect practice gun for newbies like me to get comfortable shooting centre fires cheap. Why burn an expensive gun out just to impress the range rats

In a 223 you are looking at 12 000-15 000 rounds before accuracy becomes an issue.

Hmmmmmmm?????

Yeah but they sell the Axis in many more calibres then the 223, its just the cheapest centre fire round to practice with. Plus who wants to knock around a remmington model bdl with the nice satin finish

And yes that is the reason for the sloppy bolt, a cheap if inelegant solution to make sure the shell matches to the chamber in exactly the same way everytime

In the month of February I haven't had the opportunity to shoot a lot. The axis has taken down some coyotes as a bone stock unit with a spare bipod and sling being the only addition to it out of the box shooting the 55gr UMC bulk ammo.

I have rolled up speer tnt 55's for some ladder testing when I get the opportunity.

I did take apart the magazine and epoxy the bottom plastic to the metal eliminating some play. This turned out to be a big difference maker as the UMC ammo that I had issues jamming now feeds without issue. When I had it taken apart it looked like the molded plastic wasn't a perfect fit and the play was affecting tension on the mag spring. Now that that's resolved I'm 100% happy.

Once I decide on a scope upgrade I will be getting the EGW one piece base and some Signature Zee rings to go on. The stock scope and the trigger don't bother me much. I was initially going to put in the Basix trigger as a first upgrade, and feel this will be the best money spent on the rifle, but will be upgrading the glass first.

I need to track down a suitable piece of aluminum to bed into the forearm as another project for this gun. Will keep the reviews coming as the rifle gets more use.

I had a Stevens in .223. ( Awesome shooter with the factory trigger) then sold it and got an edge because of the DBM. The Edge was fine in terms of accuracy but the trigger was horrible so I installed a rifle basix. However, IMHO the rifle was just to cheaply built for me so I sold it and wish I had kept the Stevens.

I did buy one of the new S2 Vanguards Yes they are a couple hundred more but boy what a difference in quality.

Edge/Axis are worth the asking price but most folks upgrade pretty quick once a bit of money frees up.

Anyone shooting it single shot ?

I have plans to offer replacement stocks for these, I have an idea for the mag, however if ther is a market for single shot I might make a couple.

Anyone shooting it single shot?

Tried it. I don't do it anymore with that gun.

Mine likes the 53 grain Hornaday Match bullets with 19 grains of H4198. Best group with that load was a .625 5 shot group at a hundred yards.

The 55 grain V-Max nets me slightly over an inch at a hundred.

55 grain FMJ, I wasn't happy with at all, but I was still knocking down every 3"x4" plate I was shooting at at 200 yards.

That's how my Axis in .223 performs. Over all, I'm happy with it.
