Sorry if this is a beat to death topic, I searched first and didn't find much on the topic..

What's everyone who has owed savage axis' opinions on the rifle I just picked up a heavy barrelled 223 in a Boyd's thumbhole stock, I have yet to fire it but the fit and finish seem very nice.. I'm not sure what the heck savage was thinking when they designed the mag release?

Is there a upgrade or fix for the mags? I'm thinking about possibly buying another in a larger caliber.

Thanks!

If you paid the right price you did a good thing. ?? The axis is extreamly popular, usually very accurate, triggers Need to be modified the stocks are their weekest point but you have a boyds so no issue there make sure tang and barrel are free floated. As for the mag catch... it is cheesy but it seems to work. The only issue is that they are all built off a long action platform so your bolt throw will be long for a short caliber like the .223.

They are most likely the most popular entrance level rifle in history. Some people hate em, some love them, most think they are decent for their price .

Price wise I did great, I traded up three times so I'm in it for $75 before glass! I do like the feel of the rifle probably thanks to the boyds.

There were a lot of sales and rebates before Xmas. Except for the magazine catch that is costly if broken the rifle performs well. This is a rifle for your buddy that hunts in the fall but does not care about the range and may fire 5rds a year.... for the same price older more solid rifles can be had.
Also good idea for a camp rifle that can be brought up as a spare for the guy who falls off crossing a beaver dam or drops theirs from a stand.
