Thinking of getting a axis in 223, cheap to shoot-somewhat, I can take it in the woods and shoot almost all year( varmit permit ). But I would like some opinions on a good sighting setup, so I could possibly use this in a defensive situation , maybe at night if need be. but mostly plinking, and this sight would have to be rugged. this would be my only long gun. thanks all

Look on EE on this forum. There are a few different .223 rifle options for sale. Savage Axis are great starter rifles. I have a Stevens 200, como stock I picked up for about the same price. They re cheaper to shoot and a lot of fun. You may consider a Short action Remington 700,this way you can keep the action and rebarrel it later on in a different calibre. Tikka T3 lites are very nice for a couple hundred more.

I'd suggest the hunting/sporting rifle forum, seeing as your Q's are about varmint hunting and plinking with a sporting rifle. ;)
As for night defense with a .223 bolt gun, I got nothing :).

Kidding aside, my bro has an Axis in .308, great value rifle.

No, I do not hunt, I am saying the varmit permit allows me to take it in the woods and target shoot without going 20 miles to a range. I only want 1 long gun. I am just asking in case if I had to defend my camp @ night, you know or take a shot at a coyote bothering my dogs or horses what might be a good all round sight?? since these axis s do not have rifle sights/thanks

Why would anyone be disbarred from shooting on crown land without varmint permit?
Sylvester road would be closed, then.

.223 can kill coyote.
Axis is pretty serviceable rifle, but I much prefer my Savage model 111. Better upgrades too!

Swap barrel to 1in7 then ream out to 223 AI. Now you're stabilizing 68gr+ projectiles!

;)

I'd say one of the best ones you can ever hope for it,
It's a shame the original maker had to have a life and stop producing them!
A Master he was...

Just an FYI, Boyd's is making 3 different stocks for the Axis now, which I think gives it much more appeal now.

That was my biggest complaint with mine. Aside from that, my 25-06 Axis shot very very well, especially well considering the price tag.
