Savage barrel nut help

I have a savage I am building into a long range rig. I have ordered a barrel and I was sure it is a small shank.

But the manufacturer has reached out second guessing. I sent them measurements and they are certain it is a large. It is a Savage 111 in 7mm rem mag. Going to 300 WM.

I have read and everyone says to measure the length of the nut. Mine is.875 inches. Which comes to 7/8. Saying small shank. Large shank is 5/8. Can anyone help me clear this up?

Why would you not pull that barrel (that you want to replace) and measure the barrel tenon thread?

Everything I read online said measure the length of the nut. Is that not an accurate indicator?

Yes it is.
Thats the way Savage recommend to identify barrel tenon without disassembly.

Yeah Its most definitely 7/8 of an inch. Also has the longer neck.

But the 300wm is 99% large shank according to the barrel company.

So no Im confused as hell! and want the right damn barrel

I want the ability to change it myself in the future.

contact Savage with the serial number of the rifle , they'll tell you if it's a large or small shank
(I've always used the barrel nut dimensions as an determination.)

The only large shank barrels I have seen where originally chambered in a WSM

bingo, the WSM and target actions with the red trigger blade are all large shank barrels, your 7mm mag is a small shank

Thats what I thought I had and ordered. The manufacturer really confused it. I appreciate the call to confirm but it seems like "99% chance the 300 winmag is a large shank" isnt and never was the case
