I have a question for removing the Savage rifle barrel. Besides the barrel wrench do I need a barrel vice or can I use my bench vice with wood shims to hold the barrel or the action.

If the barrel nut is tight you may need a barrel vice, and action wrench and a nut wrench... all three...

I needed all 3 to remove a Stevens 200 barrel.

I tried the block of wood in the vice and wrench technique, but just couldn't clamp it tight enough to stop the action from turning.

When we got it off, it looked like the factory had put some thread locker of some sort on there, it was TIGHT!

Yes you will need a barrel vice. The wood block trick will work I had to put some corn starch between the wood and the barrel to make it grab the barrel. This stopped the barrel from slipping in the wood. I also had to use some heat to break it free and a whole lot of force.
