A friend of mine just called and said he picked up a group of items and a really great Savage bolt action 30-30 on the weekend.
He said the gun doesn't have a model number on it just "Savage Super Sport"
It appears to be pre-war and is a well built gun by the quality of the workmanship. The magazine detaches by pushing a button on the right side of the stock. I looked it up and the only thing I can find is a Model 40.

The two things that point to Model 40 are;
The mag release button on the right side of the stock.
The Knob on the cocking piece similar to a Springfield but shorter.

He was thinking of having a scope mounted but was advised he should leave it as is.
Are they uncommon, and are they collectable?

It's actually the "Super Sporter". It features a fairly long tubular receiver and a bolt which looks like it came from a giant .22. Locking is by two lugs at the rear. I've seen them in 30/06 as well as 30/30. I believe they were also offered in 250-3000 and 300 Savage. While strong enough, they were a poor proposition for the reloader since cases tended to stretch badly at higher pressures. This would not be a concern in 30/30. Regards, Bill.

Does it look like this except have a schnable forend?

This is my 250-3000. There is one on Joe Salter but it is the 45(Deluxe) in 30-30 for under $400. Pretty clean gun. Found a couple in 250, one in 300 and then lots of 30-06.

They were designed to suit the needs of the low buget hunter. Although simple in design they are a neat gun. My Great Uncle used one in 250 during the 30's.

They aren't recognized as collectible yet which was in my favor for a change.
Mine shoots like the dickens with just the factory Lyman peep sight. It was already D&T'd so I will be fitting a Griffin and Howe side mount on it.

The early guns are like mine and the Joe Salter gun. Mine was made in 1928-30 somewhere. They changed to teh schnable and inletted buttopm release later on. Made from 1928 to 1940. They had tough competition against Remingtons and Winchesters of the day. Being brought out at the eve of the depression did not help.

After the war they were reborn and the fugly 340. They shoot too but are in the top ten of the ugly list with a Rem 710.

Randy Schermer on 24hr is the guy to talk to if Joe doesn't have info to help you. He is the only guy on 24 with much interest in them.;)

The model 40's usually command the same prices as the model 340's do in Canada, except for the ones in 250, they bring a premium because of the caliber.

Not alot of 45's out there but I have seen one in Canada, I think it was in 30-06 and was sold on this forum about 2 years ago. Went for $300 iirc.

There is at least one 250 model 45 in Canada too! Joe is right tho, most of the few you will find are plain 40's. Alot of them up here seem to be the earlier model rounded forearm like mine as compared to the schnable and button release.
