Savage bolt heads

I'm not sure if Western Gunparts has them, but they may be worth a try. The last one I bought was from Brownell's about a year ago. I haven't tried ordering anything from them recently after the export rules changed though.

thanks guys...I have a Remington 722 here without an extractor..I thought of the Sako thing, have done it before but then I heard guys were putting Savage 110 heads on Rem bolts..thought I'd check into it....
anyone have a Savage 110 bolt kicking around...or a push feed Model 70?

We stock a few Savage bolt heads Rick. I mentioned to Ardent that I have a file around showing the conversion. Haven't tried it myself yet, but it does appear possible....

If you are looking for the rivet style Rem extractor for the 223 head size, I have a brand new one.

PM me if interested.

thanks Jerry,

I have a Rem 722 in 244 here(actually I have two of them:D ) with a broken extractor....I don't think a 223 size 700 part will work...I'm wondering if a magnum 700 extractor will work...the 722 undercut is bigger than a .473" 700 undercut so I'm thinking maybe the magnum 700 extractor will work....I have an extra magnum bolt but I don't want to dig the extractor out just to check....

bolt change

For the cost, time, and possible headaches, wouldn't it just be easier to buy a Stevens?:D :D :D

Sorry, couldn't resist.

I have enjoyed all the swapping that is possible with the Savage/Stevens action. Easy to do and you don't need a lathe.

:D smartazz:rolleyes: ;)

a Stevens won't have the class(?) and feel of a 50 year old Remington 722 in a 12" twist 244 caliber:D ...I paid less for this rifle than a new Stevens.....and I have a lathe....

What do you mean? Didn't the Savage 110 come out a long time ago too (Jan of 1958 to be exact-don't you love Google)?

The Stevens is a more polished version (literally) of that very same rifle. So could be called a modern classic of enduring design (oh, the spin - get me a bucket!!!!). Same quirky design and shape. Most parts still interchange too.

But then 722 barrels still need to be chambered and machined for the 'rings of steel'. Not so easy for switch barrels.

I need a lathe...or just build more SAVAGES.

OK...to be more precise...when the Savage 110 was designed by Nick Brewer as an improvemwnt over his earlier Model 340....(anything was an improvement over this model:D ) and introduced in 1958 it did not have the extractor that it has today.....about 1960-61 it was changed to the present style, which incidentally was copied by Winchester for it's push feed M70 in 1964.

As for the Stevens being a "more polished version" I have to disagree. Last year I owned a 1960 vintage medium action Savage 110 in 308 that had bluing better than a new Browning. It had real cut checkering and felt much like a Win Featherweight (with your eyes closed):D . It was the early extractor version in a lefty. Sold it to a CGN'er whose handle escpaes me...

as for "quirky design",...the Savage 110 has that cornered for sure...with it's goofy looking "sear lever"(?) on the right side of the receiver...it works though...and the barrel nut?...well that's just plain old mega-quirky....but it works too...for guys who like to barrel swap...I just buy another rifle rather than swap barrels:D

you know even with all the bashing it gets..the push feed M70 might one of the best actions out there......a good safety, a good and simple trigger....and a Savage extractor:cool: ..how can it be bad...but that's another story...:)
