Savage bolt lift kit

I don't own a Savage but out of curiosity I did a brief search via google on this topic and there seems to be a fair bit out there about it. Seems to be a simple fix...if needed.

I'm curious if anyone has tried the thrust bearing trick I read about...

http://www.avidrc.com/product/1/bearings/192/5x12x4-Thrust-Bearing-F5-12M-bearings.html

I bought and installed the bearing kit, it doesn't reduce the amount of force required to lift the bolt, but it does make it a bit smoother, well I'd say noticeably smoother but nothing incredible.

I don't know that I would recommend or condemn it, it's a pretty ho-hum modification that is cheap. Try it if you want, but it wont make your rifle feel like a different gun and it wont break the bank either.

Theres a guy sellin em on the ee for $20ish I think ive been thinking about givin them a spin and see what the fuss is all about. Theres a guy at my range that wont shut up about them.

Savages have a reputation for being hard to open. I practice opening the bolt not by grapsing it between the forefinger and thumb but smashing it open with a tensed up hand.

I got the idea from seeing footage of Finns smash open their mosin nagants bolts in WWII.

I took my Savage to a gunsmith (Jason Spencer) and he said the only way to make the bolt easier to open was to weaken the main bolt spring -- he didn't recommend doing that and so I didn't.

I have a few Savages and the only one that had a stiff bolt was the Edge/Axis, and even it became a little smoother after use. The one on my 111 cycles a hell of a lot nicer than those on the M700s that I have tried.

I got a kit from Ishodu on this site for $25 shipped IIRC and it was a real, noticeable improvement and well worth the money IMHO. Drop him a PM and tell him I sent you:)

Improving bolt lift and cycling of a Savage or Axis is more then just adding a part. The proper job of bolt timing involves several steps and the entire barreled action is needed.

It makes a huge difference that is easily noticed and appreciated.

PM or email if interested.

Jerry

It comes with the kit from Ishodu and is the silver part behind the bolt handle and right under the end bolt.
