Savage bolt won't close....

This is a used Savage Model 111 hunting rifle that the action and barrel were sent to gunsmith for barrel work (muzzle Break).
Now I can't close the bolt completely. Everything was just fine before I sent it out. Scope base and action screws checked and nothing changed bolt wise...
Bolt will only rotate 1/4" then there is a solid "click" and that's it. Bolt will actually eject a chambered round too. I'm testing this with barrel and action removed from the stock and no go.
Any suggestion would be much appreciated.
Thx

Is it possible that the barrel was reinstalled without sufficient clearance between the barrel face and bolt face?

Waiting to here back from gunsmith if they actually did remove barrel from action to cut it and add muzzle break.
Is it standard procedure to remove barrel from action to perform this type of work?

Check that your firing pin sear, the round knob on the bolt body should be in the same position as the bolt head, if it is not then the bolt will not go all the way in.

Depends. May or may not have been necessary, depending on the gunsmith and the lathe he used.

Bolt is in all the way and cycles and will extract a round... but the bolt handle won't close.
Could it be something in the trigger assembly that's keeping me from closing the bolt?

Not on a Savage long action. Because of the floating head only the rear of the bolt head engages the action.

Either there is something in there or the headspace is way off.

The Smith not seeing this is a huge concern IMO.

Nothing was disassembled or added that was not previously on this rifle. The mystery started after the trip to the smith. Now I'm waiting for his reply... Starting to think that it might be a headspace issue.

Thx for the help

If he took the barrel off, he took the action off the stock, check for the forward bolt maybe protruding in the receiver.

He more than likely removed the scope bases as well, he may have put the wrong screws in, that would also prevent from closing.

Sounds kind of like the barrel is turned in one turn too far. With a conventionally fitted barrel (no lock nut), this can't happen. He must have had a good reason to remove the barrel.

Barrels need to be longer than 21" to fit into my lathe with an action attached. And even then, generally it's not a good idea to just have the muzzle sticking out.... how would you square it up if there's only an inch or 2 to work with?

It's a good assumption that barrels get removed for any barrel cuting or threading...
