Savage BVSS .22-250 (pic heavy)

Just wanted to update you all on my progress I made it out to the range to test my loads at longer distance. Due to forgetting my gloves and it being -12 and windy we only got out to 400yds.

My best load at this distance was 55gr vmax in front of 36.5gr RL15.

I haven't measured the group yet target is in the truck still. I'm eating dinner and cleaning my guns then I will post it. By eye it looks like 3shots just under 1"@400yds with a solid 10mph cross wind. Group was witnessed by beaverfur. I also had no issues smacking a 10" gong off hand with my new to me SS Browning a-bolt .300wm and factory 150gr corelokts at 400yds!! DEAD MOOSE!!.

I wonder if the group was shot with a $10,000 target rifle if I would have received a few positive posts.....or possibly if the group was 4x the size some one maybe comfortable giving a congrats......guess I'll just pat myself on the back

Next weekend weather permitting we will be going out to 600yds does anyone have any requests to prove these groups are being shot apparently some feel I'm full of BS even though I have a witness. I take pics of my range and of the target is there anything else.

Oh I also smoked a black bird at 400yds with two witnesses who are CGN members but I guess that never happened either because my rifle isn't Remington and isn't worth more then my car.

These are load development groups so no need to shoot five but when I get the load nailed down I'll go 5 just cant rush the shots.

Hey Jerry thanks man maybe I got a factory freak either way I'm happy as a pig in s**t......lol....

600yds will be a challenge I have never shot that far in my life I hit a gong at 550 a few times but it was tough.

My Chrony betamaster will be here this week so I will be doing strings over it to average my MV and see if there is any variation in my loads.

This will come in handy for when my .264 comes together and I send Leupold my scope and ballistic info to get the CDS dials done.

Speaking of which is it here yet?

Had Savage 22-250. I used to pound beer bottle caps into 2" by 6"s and shoot at them. Am very familiar with what that rifle/round is capable of. BIG pat on the back 2 U. You are my new internet hero.

Well I did it on my first try with a cold barrel kind of played it out like hey there's a moose shoulder the rifle steady the hairs and squeeze and bam first shot rung the gong. Follow up missed and #3 rung it again.....I'll try it again next weekend and video tape it although I will likely miss when under pressure like that .......off shooting sticks its too easy I almost feel bad.

If you want to take better pics, first get rid of the sheet! Nice thought but wrong equipment. If you are going to use a blank background you need difused lighting to prevent shadowing. An external flash is handy as it can soften the light and give a picture more character.

Thanks its my Dad's farm he passed away recently and left it to me in his will but my sister doesn't like that and decided to get a lawyer and contest it......so I don't know if I will get to keep it or not......If I get it then I will be building a range with back stops at 100yr increments up to 800yds as well as a trap field if I can find a good used electronic thrower on the cheap.

The quality isn't necessarily in the camera, it's in the composure of the photo you are taking....this coming from a guy with $6000-$8000 worth of DSLR gear in a bag. Quality counts for the sharpness of the photo...this will be in the glass (just like scopes).

There are snapshots and there are photographs. Either can be taken by both $100 cameras and $3000 cameras alike.

Have you tried H380 or IMR3031 in your 22-250. 3031 I believe is still used as an accuracy benchmark and I shoot with a number of colleagues who use H380 as their competition load.

There are many powders that work well in the 22-250. Most are the same powders that also work well in the 220 Swift. Included are: IMR3031, IMR4064, IMR4320, IMR4007, Reloder 15, H4895, H380, H414, Varget, W748, W760, Vihtavuori N140, N540, N150, N550, Ramshot Tac & Big Game. Expro CF8506, AA2460, AA2520, AA2700, and probably a couple I have missed. Eagleye

"Nobody ever made a group smaller by shooting at it" (not by me, but I love the quote! Not only is it funny as hell, there's a lot of wisdom buried in it too...)

Remember that a group can be lucky-good or lucky-bad, which makes any one single group not particularly meaningful (so carrying around in your wallet the smallest groups you ever shot actually doesn't really mean much at all). Competition Benchrest deals with this by taking the "agg" (average size of five five-shot groups). When testing ammo, a fairer picture can be gotten by considering all groups fired, not just the best groups.

Still, with all that said, it looks like you and your rifle are both doing quite well - fun, eh? ;-)

When you get around to firing 5-shot and 10-shot groups, realize that they will be bigger, and don't be discouraged by this. I'm not a stats guy, but I think I recall reading that the statistical expectation is that:

• 5 shot groups will be about 1.5 times as big as 3-shot groups
• 10 shot groups will be about 2 times as big as 3-shot groups

(Of course these are averages; fluctuations are part of the game too!)

Keep good records (elevations, loads etc), measure your distances, calculate your ballistics (using the best values you can for elevation, air temp, muzzle velocity, bullet BC), aim carefully, and you'll find it to be pretty straightforward.

If you were to place two or three stakes along your line of sight, say every 200 yards or so, and tie a two or three foot strip of surveyor tape on top - these make pretty good field-expedient wind streamers. When you are firing, strive to fire all your shots in your group when the streamers are indicating similar wind conditions.
