Hi everybody,

I am hoping to build a BUDGET .308, to be used as a truck gun / utility rifle. Most likely carried lots, shot little, and allowing for telescope being whacked out of true, still able to reliably hit 8" target at 200m.

Strange parameters, but so am I (strange, that is!).

Anyway, I had been hoping to buy a Stevens 200, but now find they no longer make them in .308. Saw a combo Savage at Reliable today, for $550. Handles pretty nicely, and I do like the detachable mag. Sadly, I really don't need the $50 Burris scope thats on the combo, as I have a semi-decent dusk & dawn Bushnell already. Forgot to ask the shop if they would remove the Burris from the combo, and mount and boresight my telescope for any sort of discount, or even a straight trade.

Sorry to ramble - haven't finished my first coffee yet...

My question is whether anyone out there has bought one of the savage combos, and how you find them? The rifle seems solid enough, with my only observed issue being the slightly odd bolt removal / replacement. I am on a BUDGET of about $500, and yes, I do see used Stevens 200s on the EE from time to time, but people keep asking new prices for them:confused:.

Thanks for your thoughts!

I have one of the older 300WM combo guns, 111FCXP3 or something like that. Side button mag release. Non-accutrigger. Its a good gun design, but I must have got a bum barrel on mine. It changed point of impact dramatically as it heated up. I'd still recommend the gun. Mine was clearly the exception to the rule as almost everyone else is happy with theirs. Its a good basic rifle. Oh yeah, one more thing, the flexible front stock bothered me and made me wonder if it had some negative impact the accuracy situation. I'll never know, as I switched to a wood stock and changed barrels and now it shoots as it should.

I have a 111fcxp3 in 30-06. No accutrigger. Groups very well at 100.
Forget the rings. Plastic junk.
Forget the scope. POS.

I replaced both and am very happy with the new system

Buy just the gun but get the accutrigger version. You will be happy.

Who told you they don't make the .308 Stevens anymore? Savage still lists it on their website.

I have the Savage combo in 300WM and while the scope isn't the greatest, the gun doesn't get used that often and the scope has held zero and worked reliably with 300WM recoil for at least 100 rounds down the tube.

The Savage package rifle is a good deal anyway you look at it, even if you do swap out the scope.

And yes, I've also noticed people are asking 'new' prices for used Stevens on the EE. I guess it's just greediness or a testament to how good the Stevens actually are for the price.

I picked one up 3 years ago in a 300WSM, to use as a Boat gun, for moose, to haul around and not worry about the dings, and scrapes.

I replaced the glass with a Signature Burris 3x9x40mm.

It is what it is, very respectable groupings, not fancy but functions, and has proved its self in the field for me.

After 2 seasons I spayed the stock down with Bed liner and it looks as good as new.

A good rough neck gun at a reasonable price.

I own one in 30-06
The scope did blow up - Simmons - but i sent it to bushnell, they own simmons and they replaced it for free.
THe action is strong and it has done everything I wanted it to do

I'm gonna have to look into the Stevens availability... somebody's has their wires crossed somewhere, with the info I've been receiving locally...

Thanks all for your opinions!

Neal
