Has anyone here ever thought of getting the savage custom shop to build a model 10/11/12 in 7.62x39?Maybe somehing with a heavy barrel around the 16-20" length. I'm thinking this with a mdt lss chassis or similar could be a great pairing with some of the semi's out there. I do own a cz527 and it is fantastic...I'm looking for something a little more modular. I know the cartridge isn't really Built for long range, but I'd like to see what it could do. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who might have a few extra rounds of these rolling around.;) or... Is this a waste of effort.

I've always thought about building one as "truck gun" with a pre-fit barrel around 20", more as a low recoil "jack of all trades, master of none" type of rifle. I wouldn't expect it to be a precision rifle by any means.

If you spec'd out a 7.62x39 chamber with a .308 bore you could use a lot more bullet options. It's been done before and it would be the route that I would go.

I own one of the savage scouts in 7.62x39. It shoots really well but there are issues. The rifle uses 3 round magazines that suck a ton to use. They are prone to locking in tilted, the feed lips are really short so if you work the bolt slow it will jam. You need to ram the bolt forward.

If you go the MDT route like I am currently going now you will need to modify a .223 aics magazine to take 7.62x39mm something that as of right now I cant find any info on anyone completing. I am currently working on the magazine and had promising results with some wooden parts I made making a 6 round magazine. I have just knocked a test piece out of aluminum so we shall see how it holds up.

yep.. been there, done that. Again, the big problem is the feeding. The Russian rd has too much case taper to stack properly in conventional shaped mags... Why the Savage rifle has limited case capacity. I was hoping Savage would make a mag specific to this rd but they cheaped out.

If you really want to get creative, you can modify a 308 AICS type mag to account for the taper and build a follower to suit... Essentially, you are making an AK mag INSIDE the 308 mag.

Or "easier", make DBM that uses factory mags like the CZ's... DBM is far easier to design and fab then mags soooooo...

WRT to ballistics, the cartridge is very well defined and ballistics aren't going to change. Accuracy is only limited by your handloads and quality of barrel.

Far easier set up, just build a 300 Blackout and run super sonic ammo. Ballistics are similar and all factory parts will work. A 223 donor, barrel and go have fun.

Oh, did you work out how to make a PPC/Russian sized bolt head? yet another hurdle in the build.

because of the magazine issues, and the bolt head issue, and the funny bore issue I went with a 30 IMSHA.....you could go with a 300 savage though, it just doesn't sound as cool, but the flip side is dies are cheaper and easier to find.......make your brass out of 308 brass and your good for life
