Is any one building detachable bottom metal for a long action savage in 300 Rum??? If I can't find any I will probably shoot it singly.

I am looking to build something to run with my buddies 338 edge and I'm thinking that a 300 Rum with the 240 SMKs might come close.. Or get a 338 Edge or 338 Edge AI.

Also is any one running a 300 RUM AI??

Any one running the 240 SMK out of a Rum?? How does it run??

Thanks

On you mag question, NOPE and none in the foreseeable future. Best you can do is graft in a RUM box from Savage into last gens actions. Savage has dumped the entire RUM lineup and if there are no factory rifles - no accessories.

As for the second, I shot 240's out of a RUM some years back. LR whoop A$$ was very impressive. Problem is that 240's do need sorting out of the box and may grenade in a rough bore. QC is not all I would have expected given the costs but that may have improved?????

I ended up shooting more 220gr MK's and these worked just fine out to a mile and were sub MOA at 1000m. I think the new 208 Amax and 210gr Berger would be my choice for this set up today. But then I wouldn't need a RUM either - 300WM is just fine for LR plinking when using a long tube.

And if all you want is superb LR ballistics, why not just go with a 7WSM or 7RM and push 180gr Bergers over the horizon? Better ballistics then the 300 RUM and easier on the pocket book.

My 7 Mystic which is my version of the 280AI pushed 180gr Bergers at 2800+fps from a 24" Shilen. Was spooky accurate in the winds at 1000m.

Or you could shoot a 6.5 Mystic or similar and have all sorts of fun for even less money spent and longer barrel life. Then you could get a moderate case 6mm or even the wonderful 6BR......

Keep in mind that LR accuracy has as much to do with the bullet as the amount of powder you burn. A large case can only provide a bit more speed. Crappy bullets just get expensive.

With todays amazing small cal bullets, you don't need a boomer to shoot extreme accuracy 3 to 4 seconds away. yes, wind drift is more but a predictable rifle can be steered in some pretty nasty winds.

Inside 1000m, I will be able to keep up with most 338's using my 223 as far as plinking goes. If you can dope the conditions and have a well tuned rig, you will be quite surprised at the level of accuracy available.

Bigger is only better when you want to put a hurt on something.

I was looking at building a 338 LM in a savage action and was disappointed in how there was not much support for that cal in the 110. So I then looked at a 338 RUM and then ran into the problems Mystic mentioned were it would be a single shot rifle. I thought fine, I can single shot it. I then got looking into the energy out to 1000 yards on a 338 RUM and a 7mmRM and there is a difference, but not enough that the 7mmRM would not be able to compete with the big boomers. The efficiency of the 7mm Cartridge is amazing and they can haul a big bullet too with less recoil and less powder. Means you get more barrel life too. That and I can fire the 7mmRM without a break, which you will find people will appreciate if they are shooting around you or if you are hunting with it and have no hearing protection. Long story short I scrapped the 338 RUM build and built a 7mmRM and it shoots like a dream, I get a box magazine, I spend less on bullets, I shoot SUB MOA (Pushed it out to 650yd so far) and I am confident that I can take down large game as far as I can see it.

Go on Berger's and Hornady's website and check out the ballistic coefficiency of the 30 cal and 7mm bullets and punch them into a calculator like JBM and you will see that you will not give up much sticking with a 7mm instead of blowing your socks off on a RUM.

well maybe i need to do more investigation.. But yea.. I need to lay some hurt down on the pigs at a 1000.. My 260 AI I bought from you Jerry will work just fine for paper.. But I need the energy for critters that far away..

I will do some more checking..

Jerry can you check if Shillen has a 300 Rum AI reamer???

The 260 barrel went on like a dream.. I will say it is the shortest throated barrel I have ever run across though.. But that may be me not seeing lots of higher end barrels...

Sorry, no RUM AI reamers. They do have the 338 Edge though.

Also, keep in mine the cost of dies. 300 RUM - cheap and available (I have some that I can sell you that work really well). Move to the 40deg shoulder and bring $$$$$ and a whole lot of patience as I doubt you will see dies for 6 months unless you can make some yourself.

You need to have a body or sizing die as case growth will need a bump almost every firing. I FL sized my brass every firing. Brass does flow when there is that much powder being ignited energetically.

If a hurt is what you want to do (assume you mean wild boar/pig vs prairie dog), then work around the 208gr Amax and 210gr BERGER VLD - 3100fps as a nice top end. Both of these are proven LR game getters. The Sierra MK's also work but I prefer the QC of the other brands. The 240gr MK has limited availability but I can get them.

How long a pipe can you live with? I am thinking 28" to 30" as a nice range THEN adding a muzzle brake cause this thing is going to boot. Portability is not going to be a strong suit.

have you visited www.longerangehunting.com? Lots and lots of info. Also, have 3 articles there that might help with your project build and set up.

Let me know if I can help you get a pipe for this boomer.

Hey Jerry.. Yea a 30" tube is good..only cause I don't think I can get a 32 from Shilen..LOL.. Portability is not an issue..

I may have to go with the Edge then.. My buddy has dies and everything already So that would work well..

I will give you a call or email when I am ready to order the Barrel.. Thanks

MP.. I think it is going to be lots of fun..LOL
