Savage Edge XP (New) .

Looking into getting a .308 win , .243 or .270 . And saw that Savage has released a new product the Savage Edge . The website say's it shares some similarities with the Model 110 . Has anyone had one of these rifles or heard any new on them ?. The sub 400 $ has me looking . http://www.wanstallsonline.com/bolt-action/ .
This is a better deal in my opinion...414$

One thing is for sure - scopes on those are not gonna hold up. I have 111FCXP3 in 30-06 and replaced it before made first shot out of it. Others will tell you same on factory scope.

I bought a 111FCXP3 in 7mm RM. Used the scope for my ruger 10/22 and replaced it with a nikon. Replaced the trigger with a Timney and it shoots very well. I primarily bow hunt but at season end i'll occasionally pick up a rifle. It was purchased to be a care free bang around hunting rifle and has worked well.

Yes I too bought the savage 111 fcxp in 30-06 gave the guy extra 60 bucks n upgraded to a bushnell 3200 elite 3-9x40 and bought some burris rings, that's a good setup but I'm not getting as tight of a group as I want.. Although I don't have a bipod could be a reason? How are you guys managing with the savage 111 combo?

Just how did Savage manage to come out with an even cheaper rifle? I like my Savage's, most are good shooters, but as we all know, pretty unrefined. They have all the character of a carriage bolt in plain black. I think I'd like to hear that the XP is built off the standard receiver, bolt and barrel. We know that works. Sure wouldn't want something that turns out to be like Remington's 710's. Plastic stock could sure do with some improvements on the base model Savages.

Care to explain? I'm not saying your wrong i'm just curious to the resson.

The stevens is a buget but proven platform. This is a budget gun with an attempt to under price of their own and Remmys etc budget guns. For the sake of saving a couple more dollars its not worth moving from the Stevens, Marlin Xs7s or if you like Detach mags, the savage package guns.

Just my humble op.

;) First of all, this belongs in the HUNTING forum not the precision rifle forum. I'm sure the edge makes for a descent HUNTING rifle. Get back to us when you are running a stevens 200 or savage 1XX package rig.

That being said...the price point of the edge makes it hardly seem worth going to when a stevens or cheap package gun allows you more customization options as well as a better action and trigger. I'm sure someone has done a writeup on savage shooters. I'll try and find something to post here. I'm sure Ian or one of the others will chime in with what makes the 110 models more suitable for a precision/target rig. BRB

With my 308, shooting 168 grain cust comps over varget, most 5 shots groups are just over an inch @ 100 yards. Not quite as good as I expected after my stevens 223, but too be honest I have not been too consistant or serious about developing a load for this gun yet so it may well get better.

FYI, I bedded and switched out the scope before ever shooting it.

I handled one in .223 at the local gun shop last week. I found the bolt handle when you lift it all the way up is rather stiff to do so. I found it sticks half way up then you have to exert more pressure to get it all the way up. I know i read about this stiff bolt in other places to. Other then that it looked alright to me. Personaly i would get a Stevens 200 over the Edge. Stevens is a proven design and it has aftermarket mod availability.

I actually take back what i said in my previous post, Savage 111fxcp3 combo + upgrade scope to a basic bushnell 3200 elite 3-9x40, new rings! a must, this is without a bipod (used wooden blocks) and without accu-trigger, i was getting consistent groups of just over 1" MOA at 100m, very happy and thats with factory loads,

When i said my previous comment.. i actually never used it yet when i added the new rings, spoke too soon :( plus you have to shoot at least 60 rounds to begin breaking the rifle in, everyone told me this but of course i didn't believe or pay attention.

I'm not sure how the edge is.. but the savage 111 is an amazing rifle, for hunting perfectly accurate you can achieve MOA very simple which makes you feel ultra confident! And the difference between savage and stevens is just that savage has a slightly better synthetic stock, action is the same and savage has the little combo for a crappy scope that u just upgrade next to nothing anyways. andd the rings!

Thats not all...savage has bottom metal and DBM, plus this finish is way better, on mine anyway.
