So I managed to lose the bearing under the extractor on my savage rifle. I measured one from a different rifle. It's simply a 1/8" ball bearing. So I figured I'd just swap it into the bolt from the gun I wanted to use it in. Thwang. That goes flying across the room never to be seen again too. Nobody local seemed to have just a ball bearing. So I started to look around for things to rob a ball bearing out of. Skate board bearings are too big, I ripped apart a bearing from a router bit, too small. Then I cut the top off a Mastercraft 1/4" nut driver after my buddy pointed it out. Nailed it.

So if for some reason you lose that bearing and can't find one, or need one right now, fire up the angle grinder and put a couple notches in the back of a 1/4" drive extension until you can rip the top off to get the bearing out. While not the cheapest way to get one, it's probably the fastest, especially if you have extra tools kicking around.

3.5mm stainless ball bearing, if your still in a jam send me a PM and I can set up with a couple.........

I've resorted to using a section of a nail that was the right diameter. Drill rod or a section of music wire that can be hardened, if you want permanent. File and sandpaper to make a nice radius (it does not need to be perfect!) on the end, then cut off a section that is a little longer than it is wide, say 1 1/2 times the diameter. Press that down on the spring, insert part, start over if ya gotta!

Most bike shops, if you have one near, can provide inch or metric size bearing balls if you need.

Hint: the magnetic strips that are used for holding stuff up on office white boards, make a handy 'sweep' for finding missing magnetic parts! Learned that while learning why a decent set of watchmaking tweezers only seems a bad idea while you are looking at them, the cheap ones seem a bad idea when using them, eh!

If you keep a radio blasting when you work, you rob yourself of the opportunity to hear where the part landed, too.

Cheers

My savage 110 has run for years now with a rounded finishing nail inserted into the spring from a bic pen! I should probably get proper parts but it just keeps working...

Bicycle shop.
They should use that size.
Bicycle Café here in town might have one.
If you happen to be around their place, stop in.
Next door to McCracken's.

Here is a non link to 100 1/8" balls for about $5. Order on the web and they come to your door.
