:stirthepot2:Just a quick question? If you where buying a rifle for f-class shooting would you buy the F/TR or the PALMA buy Savage or buy a Model 700 Target Tactical with the Bell&Carlson stock? Must be .308.

When I bought my F/TR I had the option of the Palma but could not get to see it. I bought the F/tr and sometimes wish I had gone for the Palma, the adjustable cheekpiece and slightly less weight make scope and accessories options much better.

I recently started shooting F class with the Savage F/TR in 308. What a gun.. Wow.. very accurate out to 1000 yards.. Was hitting the V-bull at 1000 yards. I think that is a 5 inch circle. I am very happy with my F/TR....

FTR was designed for F-Class

Palma was designed for Palma or TR (Sling and Irons) Shooting.

Why not go with the one designed for the type of shooting you plan on doing?

Of those two options, I'd opt for the Palma because of the adjustable stock. If you want to stick w/ Savage, but aren't tied to the two mentioned, I'd opt for the savage f class w/ the f/open style stock. The F/Tr stock is really a sad excuse for a prone stock.

Remington doesn't make anything i would rely on to be suitable for use in F-Class without modification, however as a basis for a custom rifle, you can't go wrong.

The Savage FTR shoots very well. Team Savage uses them. They are cheaper than the palma model, and as someone that does not use cheek weld, i do not consider this lack of an adjustable cheek piece as a problem. I agree with Matt's comments about the stock, but then it is unlikely you will not be bitten by the bug and the desire to upgrade along the way anyhow.

I would buy an FTR and upgrade the stock if you really think you need to. You will have the best of all worlds for not a whole bunch more.

Bear in mind, the FTR rifle (and the Palma) would be used in FTR class. If you buy the F-Class models, which come in 6BR or 6.5-284, you will be competing against full-on customs in Open Class. This is a much more technically superlative class.

And since upgrading is more then likely, especially with the F TR stock (Ugh), why not get a superlative stock from the get go.

If you went Palma, they are listed at $1740 which likely means approx $1860 when the dust settles.

With a budget like that, you can build up with a match barrel AND Robertson stock that is set up for your form of shooting. Plus the rig will outshoot the Factory pipe.

I love Savage rifles but I think their pricing is getting ahead of other options.

Its too bad that they dont offer some other calibers in those models as I have also been looking at them but the only one they offer in a .223 is the F/TR. :(

barrels are cheap, in the grand scheme. If you really want a palma or BR in .223, you can swap the bolt head and order a prefit Savage catalogue. For F class, a BVSS would do admirably.

F/tr

So we pulled the pin on the Savage F/TR, at the $1139 it was a pretty good deal. The Palma model is really nice but $700 more for a stock is a little on the high side, ya I know the end of the barrel is turned down for iron sights and there is a few other differences but if your not using them why pay for it? Loaded up some Berger 155gr. and some 168gr. A-max, so off to the range we go. Buy the way this is for my 15yr. old boy, he finished 8th at Connaught this year on his CL course shooting TR rifles, and was invited back for next year to qualify for NRT and Bisley. Thanks for all the input on rifle choice.

Congratulations Dad! My hat's off to you.

Good deal Dad! The cadets won't be too keen on him switching over to F class! The palma stock isn't worth the extra- you could go over to Robertson's Composites and order the stock that suits him best for a bit more.

Savage ?

So after a little breakin time and trigger adjusted to 9oz. I think it is getting close? Just have to get the 20 moa base and glass bed it. Might have to rethink this Remington thing:confused:

Im thinking about buying a Savage 10FP in .223 to learn on, then glass bed the action and replace the barrel to a 30" 1:7 twist for the 80/90gr Berger VLDs.

Would you say that it would be easier and/or cheaper to just buy the Savage F/TR instead of the 10FP?
